Pat,

I have found if one loves to sing, they should try a karaoke type of site that allows feedback. Singing on a semi-daily basis and being critiqued DOES help us to understand what other people are hearing in our voices.

I have used Singsnap for a few years now and it has helped my tone and pitch immensely. I have also listened to people who appeared to be tone deaf actually sing on key and in pitch after a few months of singing there. It does work for most people, singer or not. I have witnessed it myself with a few close friends there.

Pitch correction should only be used as a last resort, IMO. Practice, practice, practice is GREAT advice for us wannabe singers.

To say that a musician should only use pitch correction as a last resort is somewhat like saying that a vocalist should only use backing tracks as a last resort.

I *don't* love to sing and I have no burning desire to be a singer. I'm an instrumentalist. To me, vocals are a necessary evil if I want to record music, just as background music is a necessary accessory for people who want to sing.. Why is it that the singers have no problem using software to create their entire band... yet I get called a cheater if I play 5 out of 6 instruments on my own song, then use pitch correction to help me with my weak spot? (at least I *AM* singing and not cutting and pasting clips of a professional singer into my song)

We all play to our strengths and fill in the rest with whatever solutions are available.

I have to admit, the last place I would expect to hear such resistance to using a canned solution is on the BIAB forum! Everybody here uses one or another solution that keeps them from having to do every single part of their songs!

I'm not ranting at you, Trax... I just don't understand the double standard on this topic

I don't either.

Use whatever tools you have to create a song.

It would be different if you did a song called "The Guitar Stylings of Pat Marr" and then used Brent Mason for your solos.

Don't let the naysayers keep you from doing what you're wanting to create. That's what the tools are for.

Thanks for your encouragement Bob.

This is one of those times when what I wrote at night seems harsh when I re-read it in the morning. A well-known principle of psychology states that "frustration breeds aggression", and I'm afraid that the frustration of watching my wife die without being able to fix it or change it is making me mean.

Maybe it's time to step away from the forum for a while

Sincere apologies to anyone I may have offended in recent weeks.

Pat: You didn't offend anybody. When times are tough, it is good to hang around with friends -- even they don't always agree with everything you say or do! It is hard for some of us to relate to your issues, but know that we are thinking of you.

It can be addictive and again you never absolutely apprentice to sing. Work on your chops. Get a articulation coach. Anything!Using RTs and such is one affair but to Dr. your articulation or arena to the point that you're assuming off something you can't do & calling it you is array of weird. JMHO. I'm not absolutely that apprehensive but aggravating to be better.

Hey Pat,
Just skimmed back over this whole thread and you have nothing to apologize for.
Look at all the responses you've generated, pros and cons and all the good information that's come out because of it.

I happen to use pitch correction as a way to make up for not being blessed with a great voice but I also agree with those who condemn it in that I should also try to improve naturally on what I've got.

In the world of musical expression, I find no room for elitism as it becomes a form of censorship for the soul.

So keep on contributing to the forums and take any criticisms with a grain of salt, preferably sea salt, as I hear it's better for you and still goes well with tequila
