I understand how to make instruments solo, what I don't understand is how can I change up the solos in each chorus?I know that if I want a piano to solo Bar 10 to 30 and then have all the other instruments start up agin I just mute then back to normal. But, how to I change up solos in each chorus? Am I missing something or just stupid? Thanks Leonard

Leonard,

By "change up solos" are you meaning that you'd like a different solo instrument for each chorus? For example: a trumpet in solo chorus 1, sax solo in chorus 2, etc.

Regards,
Noel

There are some 'Medley' Real Tracks with alternating Soloists...but other than that, I'd say go to Real Band and generate different solos for specific sections of the tune.

Hi again, Leonard,

There are a couple of ways to do what you're after. The easiest is what Mitch suggests. Here's how I'd do it.

1. Right-click on the Soloist track and select "Add/Remove Realtracks"

2. Select a solo from the Realtracks Picker window and then click on the "Medley" button (upper right of the monitor).

3. Make sure the "Chorus" is selected from the drop down menu at the top of the Medley dialogue box. Select a solo realtrack for each of the slots. If you have 3 choruses, you'll need to have soloists in each of the 3 top slots.

Now, "Ok" your way out of the dialogue boxes.

Hope this helps,
Noel

Your suggestion is on the track, now I just have to figure out how to get them to play. Thanks again for quick replies.

Hi Leonard,

I imagine that you'll need to hit the play button so that the tracks are regenerated. How many choruses does your song have? (Not to be confused with the "chorus" OF a song; PG Music use the term "Chorus" to mean once through the entire song. I mention this just in case it's something your not aware of.)

All the best,
Noel

Yeah, that's what's not so great about the medley thing... each soloist will play through the entire tune so you'd have to have 2 or 3 'chorusus' meaning the tune would play 3 times through, each time with a different soloist.

Sounds more like you want to have, say, a piano for bars 13-20, then a sax at bar 33-40 etc. right ? If that's what you want to do, then Real Band is your tool for that.

Yes Noel96, I mean chorus 1..2..3...etc.LIke a Sax on chorus 1 a Bass on chorus and piano on chorus 3.
MitchC, yes I want to do that also besides soloing a whole chorus with just oneinstrumentt.I will try the real band thing also.
Tommyc,I have tried that, but it seems it will play the same solo over and over on each chorus. Maybe I'm missing something. Thanks for the help guys.

What custom setting are you talking about Tommy? Please don't just say something exists as an answer, you have to explain exactly where it is and how you use it like Noel did. Go to that menu, open this window, click on that, etc. Details, details.

Custom is near the center of the select soloist popup and is under solo mode . Select instrument . Then you must click it {Custom} and it says generate solo for a specific range of bars. Then you must decide how many bars you want and where you want them . Then click generate bars .

Leonard, Noel also touched on part of whats below.

"Soloist Editor" into help screen
review and be amazed, or like me flubbergusted.

Then thru out the pages above almost infinite
possibility soloist creation and modification
doors are opened .

"Soloist Sets". Click that when your done with above.

And thanks for the question, it opened a lot of doors for
me as exploring began.

One more item there are Two Custom selections on the main
soloist page. First TommyC mentioned, second is lower right hand
corner Clicking "Enable", then scrolling down on the influence selections to "Custom"

Good Luck !

This discussion is tricky because we need to be clear are we talking about the midi soloists or the RT soloists. That separate "Soloist" window that opens when you hit the Soloist button does not work well with the RT soloists. I think some functions might work but most do not. I always hit the Soloist instrument track at the top of the main window and pick a RT soloist there then go into the bar settings and make my adjustments. This is just for RT's. The midi soloists are best handled in the Soloist window.

Very confusing I know. I've suggested a few times since the RT soloists came out that they should consolidate both the RT and midi soloists in the same area and make it clear what works with what.

Bob,

I have tried the Realtracks in soloist with Enable Button clicked and tried out
some of the options. It does work to a point. Better than just
turning the non-check option unchecked....

The follow notes and rhythm seemed to work the best.
Also had a midi melody be generated within the melodist first, think
this "might" affect how the soloist works. Just guessing.
then Mute the melody and not use it.

Later.

Sorry to bring this thread back, but I'm still a little confused as to make a solo work.If I'm correct in assuming that just editing in a DAW is the easiest way to make an instrument solo? I have tried the soloist route, but it's not really working the way I want. Here's the nitty gritty. You know the song Take 5 with the Dave Brubeck group? Well, if you listen to the song or watch a video you see that each player has their own solo including the drummer. My main question is how do I know where to break off of one instrument and go to another? Are songs written like that or does the performers just know when to do their solo? I mean I can mute a section for a while and then mute another, but it doesn't flow like I want it to. I'm guessing my total lack of musical knowledge is a real hindrance in this Field. If I ever had the chance to play for real with real perfomers, I'd crap my pants if they expected me to do a solo.

Usually charts have sections A B C D. Although new charts sometimes have the letter in a square, all the people I know talk about it as circles. So at circle C...

Basically if you have the chart and watch you will see that they often just take a section, and do that part over and over, jumping in and out. If you have not worked together before there are a few visual cues as to where to go, like tapping your head to go back to the top or redo something.

A solo can be as few as a couple of bars though. Don't get hung up on the term.

What I would like to see is a realdrums file with Gene Krupa style drum solo's, floor tomtoms, a real jazz rhythm going on, like in Sing, Sing, Sing, or Hey Patchuco (The Mask)that kind of thing.
At present, the drums only fill for a bar or 2, what about a complete 8 bar drum solo with variations?

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
