I am doing a mixing project right now that was recorded live so there are no individual tracks for any of the instruments or vocals. What I am doing is duplicating each track (all I have to work with is L & R) and then
using EQ to bring out the vocals on the duplicated track. I plan to pan the duplicated track to the center
to see if I can bring out the vocals and solos. I don't know if this helps you but you may have to try various "tricks" to get the desire sound you are looking for.
I recall hearing just last week that of all the steps in getting a final sound the way you like it, the mixing part is the one step that should be left to a professional.
I am beginning to see why that may be good advise.
