I skipped FAWM last year, but am trying it out again this time.

Here is my first post, called "OK, Here Goes," (appropriately enough).

It's country, in the classic Merle style, using all RealTrack, with a little of my acoustic guitar strum.

All comments, critiques are welcome. Especially interested in learning mixing/mastering. (You can't hurt me, I've already been there, and am not looking for a recording contract, unless....)

OK, Here Goes

Well here goes it's OK, but you will have to hurry if you don't want to finish last! Put them all on the same post so it will be easy to keep up with you. Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like an old Kris Kristofferson song. Good job on your first FAWM song and good luck on the rest.

Thank you, guys... much appreciated.

Following Tommy's suggestion, here is a link to my second song, written and recorded yesterday, as a response to the FAWM challenge of the week, to write about "The Weather" -- called Raining Again

I had some problems with this... I adjusted the tempo several times, with a couple of ritardandos, and a general subtle ramping up of the speed (and a couple of key modulations), but when I moved it into RealBand, I found that adding RealTracks ended up with mismatched tempos partway through the track... I bet there is a workaround, but I could not find it. Maybe this also needs to be addressed by the programmers, because we really do need to be able to adjust tempos within a track.

The net result of this is that I used just midi backing, mainly orchestral strings and such, and rendering them through the Coyote SW sounds, well, kind of thin and cheesy-- you think? I may pick up one of the Garritan packages, which would probably help.

I was going for "Tom Waits produced by George Martin," but George was out of town.

By the way, PG, we need some orchestral and classical realtracks.

Larry:

Thanks for listening, for your thoughtful comments, and for showing me that I can move my songs back up to the top just by thanking people.

Moe:

I really value your input... and I always listen to your wonderful songs as well... keep it up! Great use of the PG Melodist!

Curley:

Thank you so much for your commentary. I know what you mean... I am beginning to sound a little bit like Rick Astley, but is that so bad??? I mean, even your tuneful joyful voice is oftentimes a little flat, although it is getting better. Is that practice, or the Harmony-M?

(just a little humor, people... forgive me - )

Raining Again ends abruptly, a fadeout would sound better. The verse after the fiddle break demands a rhyme with "wet," ouch, that would give writer's block to ole Danny Webster. Maybe sub a different pair. You already acknowledge where your song is weak, smooth out the few wrinkles then head for America's Got Talent. Good on ya!

Don and Peter -- thanks for listening and commenting.

Don: I agree the fade should be more extended... I will "fix it in the mix."

Don and Dan Webster: I'd like to agree with you that "wet" and "forget" are horrible rhymes, but, well, maybe you want to read it again.

Brad, I must be getting used to the rhyme...kinda like a new pair of shoes or an athletic supporter, it takes some getting used to. It is a lot easier to listen to today. Please don't misunderstand, I love the song. I was just saying how the rhyme jumped out at me on first hearing it. In the long haul, it may even prove desirable.

Good on ya, mate!
