If you plug directly into the laptop then the mic might not make that much difference, as you have witnessed. This assumes, of course, that you are not an audiophile who has golden ears because if you were you wouldn’t be doing it anyway. However if you plug a mic into a really good mic preamp then your choice of mic can be critical, depending on your needs. That is recording a vocal, guitar, drums, piano etc, as they all require different mics.

FWIW – if have only one mic it should be a Shure SM57. This is a work horse that can cover many basis.
