Yes, the Piano Roll window is an alternative way to insert/edit MIDI data. To insert a note, hold down shift+ctrl while clicking.

It is more intuitive (than the editable notation window) for people who don't read music notation, and has some more powerful features. For example, in the controller pane, you could draw in volume curves by selecting controller 7, and holding ctrl+shift while dragging.

Some additional info on selecting notes:

- Selected notes are Red.
- Click on individual notes to select.
- Shift+click on individual notes to add to the selection.
- Ctrl+click on a note to invert (toggle) its selection.
- Click on white space and then drag a rectangle around notes to select a group of notes.
