Hello all I love the sound of the old electro-mechanical pipe organs. I came across a beautiful improvisation that shows what those instruments were/are capable of and I had to share this. Goose pimples everytime here. Unfortunately the sound runs about a beat behind the pictures, but this does not disturb the beautiful sound. Just wind-up the volume Richard Hills plays the Tiger Rag on the magnificent Wurlitzer Theatre Organ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWClq1Pr7hM&feature=relatedCheers, Daniel

Daniel,
My father, R.I.P. 1992 loved organs and the music they can make. When he passed away he owned a Concord Hammond, think thats the model large full pedal model. His first official organ was an old pump organ. Remember he hooked up a vacuum cleaner to it for operation.
Anyway late 80's when they were both with us him and mom, long gone now, came to Antioch, Ca to visit us. I had contacted early the manager of "Pizza and Pipes" in Sacramento, CA. Asked and was graciously offered a tour of their Giant Pipe organ. Do believe it was a Wurlitzer, and think it came out of its original location in Ohio.
Dad was in seventh heaven as the manager explained the whole story on the organ. Explaining a lot about how the masterpiece was constructed and operated. It occupied the entire end of the gymnasium sized building.
When in military in 60's had occasion to be in Spokane Washington. Lousy reason, "Escape and Evasion" survival school for 30 days. Anyway, my Dad's sister, who was talented at keyboards took me to a church, more of a cathedral in Spokane. And she played their giant pipe organ. Do not remember name of church, but the reverb, and sounds in that church were memories to never forget. I do not remember the model, only its sounds.

Thank you all for your replies and thank you Frank for the recollection of your memories. Here in Europe we only had very few Theatre Organs and it would be amazing if I could hear one of the remaining few ones in action. Daniel

If any of you enthusiasts ever get to Atlanta, be sure to visit the Fox Theater and see "Mighty Mo," their incredible theater organ. My first job in Atlanta was at the Fox. I was privileged to meet one of the two men involved in restoration of the organ, which took 17 miles(!) of wire, among much other work. It incorporates a grand piano and a full set of trap drums. To anyone but you I would say that it had to be seen to be believed. It is featured on Monday nights during the summer as a prelude to a series of movies.
The Fox itself is a worthy destination on its own, being one of the last surviving grand theaters from the 1930s. (The Loew's Grand, which had been two blocks away and was the site of the premier of "Gone With The Wind," did not survive the wrecking ball.)

In El Segundo CA surrounded by the south runways of LAX, the Hyperion Sewage Treatment plant and a big Chevron oil refinery is a place called the Olde Time Theater. About 30 years ago a group of volunteers rescued a huge old Wurlitzer organ from it's original home in a theater in Long Beach. It was kept in storage for years until they finally got the location in downtown El Segundo. In addition to the Wurlitzer they have a Steinway 9' concert grand and a 9 1/2 foot Imperial Bosendorfer. They mostly show silent movies but they also have old time concerts too. The first time we went there to see the original Dracula I walked up to the guy who played the Wurlitzer and asked if I could noodle on one of the pianos, he said ok and I wound up playing first the Steinway and then the Bosendorfer for about a half hour. All I can say is unbelievable. I didn't try the organ because I know nothing at all about playing one but the sound of that thing is awesome. The brand new Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA has a huge organ incorporated into the building. Don't know the name of it but there was a show on TV about how it's part of the building itself.
All I can say is those things are amazing and to be the player in control of something like that must be one heckuva feeling.
