We were discussing updating songs with vocals. It can be done if your songs were retained in digital format but I have found that the older ones that were recorded onto tape are probably impossible to recover for the reason that as the tape recorders were often belt driven they tended to vary in pitch and timing as they recorded those songs. If recorded on a hot day even the tapes could stretch just enough to do this but not enough to be noticable in a quick playback but enough to make it all but impossible to sync up the recorded material with BIAB or Real Band (unless you are a very patient genius with hours of time to spend fooling with it) I've been trying this and find that they may start out in sync but soon drift and vary even when you have set tempo and pitch back to the same as the original. I've decided to just move on to new material. Much quicker and easier! Just concluded that home tape recorded vocals even backed with BIAB are not practically recoverable.

Hello, I read your post and I agree with you somewhat. I have been doing recording and mixing for some time now. And yes, I have even worked with tape myself. I have manipulated tape because that was all I had to record on at the time, I even recorded with 3 different tape recorders to achieve a phasher, echo and slapaback effect. Over the years I have also come to realize that you can get certain software's to get these effects, I am an avid user of Cakewalk, Music Creator, and other software's to do my recording's but I have also found that you can have your music scored in a chord structure you can get someone to do this, or you can let band in a box do it for you and if you know anything about cording you can go through it to re-create the songs that where once treasured to you and do a mix in BIAB, take it into a studio or if you have a recorder digital you can record your own vocals on it. It is a lot easier to move on to new things, but if you just have to do it re-create the arrangement in BIAB and it will be done right with the advent of Real Tracks. I did a song back in 1994 and I re-scored it with the original sheet music and it came out rather impressive. At first this song was just a guitar vocal demo, then recorded here in Butte, Montana with a sax as the solo instrument, then with some other friends that where musicians, they all did a good job, But BIAB did an exceptionally wonderful job. If you would like to listen here is the link to that song... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N82Ywl6lW...dQ13P1oFzlyY%3D
Music is an expression that is a universal language, Never criticize anybody to harshly. They need time to grow but when they do, they do. Always be kind in what you say and do because the man upstairs is watching.

While correcting tempo problems in a DAW is tedious, it's certainly possible. Here's a track I put together using exactly that process: How Great Thou ArtThe mix has faults a-plenty. In particular I went overboard with the BiaB instruments! It's always better to re-record if possible, but since the choir disbanded after I made the recordings, that wasn't possible. The source recording is really terrible, recorded from a mono output of the church PA system into a laptop. There's all sorts of background noise, people to close or far from their mikes... You name it. In addition to tempo-mapping the source material, I've also cut and pasted, and layered multiple different takes to get around problems. It's not anywhere close to professional, but it shows that it can be done.

Some DAWs use what is called varispeed to adjust the speed of the program to amtch something out of tune. This might help.
I know MTS has this feature.

Thank you all for responding to my post and making suggestions for a way to achieve what has seemed impossible to me. I've listened to your songs and yes, they are quite acceptable. I do have Cakewalk though I haven't learned to use it yet and Don, I will go and download MTS (thanks for the link) and see if it's something I might learn to use. I suppose my biggest problem getting around something like this is my own inability to learn and grasp a lot of the funtions that at an earlier time would have been a snap for me too. The older I get the harder it is for me to learn new techniques. The old brain just doesn't work as well as it used to. We will see what miracles may be wrought!
