I have an SD2. I like to run all my midi tracks through it and make audio tracks. I then mix/merge the audio tracks into a .wav file to be used as a song backup. I have done this for about 3 years. Just now, I find I am no longer able to record my midi track to an audio track. I'm using a ua-4fx sound module. I have not changed any cable configurations. I'm able to play midi files through the SD2 just fine. I'm also able to input via the SD2 using my usb keyboard. I can also record using the keyboard and also input to Sibelius. I've checked both midi and audio drivers and the ua-4fx is selected for Real Band, Biab, and all my other audio programs. In other words everything runs in and out of the ua-4fx and to my speakers. The only thing that I can't get to work is to Record Audio in Real Bank.

I contacted support about this and their response was to use a soft synth and/or....

".... If you're using your Ketron SD-2, your computer is going to have no way to know what your Ketron SD-2 is playing, it only sends the MIDI to the SD-2.

If you want to get the sounds from your Ketron, you will need to connect your Ketron's audio output to your audio input on your computer, and record a new audio track.

Please let us know if you have any further questions."

Well everything is connected and it doesn't work anymore. The SD2 seems to be functioning fine and the only feature not working is Record Audio in Real Band. If I can no longer use my SD2 with Real Band, can someone recommend a quality soft synth? I know there are some good ones out there, but I don't want to spend $500 on one either. I do have Coyote Forte, but I'm not sure if it is the quality of the SD2. I bought the SD2 because of the great quality that it puts out. Do any reasonably priced soft synths do the same? Should I try another sound module? Just not real sure where to go from here so I'm asking for your help. Thanks.

Well yes the only way to get the sounds from the SD2 into RB as audio is to hook up the audio out of the SD2 to the ins of your sound card. Then you have to record each track in real time, one at a time by soloing each midi track. The issue is either:
1. operator error
2. interface issue

BTW can you record into RB? Say singing.

Thanks. I don't have a mic hookup, but I can play into other pgms using my usb keyboard and the light on the sd2 blinks so I know that midi is going through it. The audio out on the sd2 goes into the ua-4fx. Like I said, all was working for 3 years and now it's not--and it's just the record function in Real Band. I'm sure it's some setting, register, config, or something like that, but I'm not a geek so.....

The sd2 works fine in BIAB. I'm not ready to dump it by any means. So that's why I was asking for a soft synth recommendation to possibly use with RB.

If it worked before, it should work again. There is a setting that has changed somewhere. In RB, what is selected for the audio input source? This can even happen outside of RB, where you set default audio devices in Windows.

You will be hard pressed to find a soft synth that sounds as good as the Ketron for General MIDI rendering, without spending some major coin. I say this as a huge soft synth fan - one of the first on this forum where I was trying to get other people on-board with soft synths. I started posting on soft synth usage back in 2003/2004 time frame.

Hi Scott. Yep. I have checked all of settings. Most rely on the master setting in control panel for Win 7, but I checked anyway. Everything is showing ua-4fx except on the Real Band midi driver window. In that window, it shows ua-4fx at the top for output, but ms sound mapper for input. However, ua-4fx is selected in the list and according to Help that's the most important thing since you can have more than 1 driver selected. Again according to Help, the place of driver in the list determines which port gets read first. I did run CCleaner on the Registry, but that didn't help either. I don't mess around in the registry though since I'm still back in the .ini days .

I'm embarrassed to to say that I had a very good soft synth and didn't even know it. I've had Mixcraft 5 for some time but never really learned much about it. I decided to load the midi file into it and mix down to an mp3. The sound is really great! I think it's almost as good as the SD2. I'm really surprised and I like being able to set the codec to a high quality mp3. I'm really glad that I took the time to give it a try. Maybe some day I'll figure out what's the problem with Real Band, but in the interim Mixcraft can be used for my midi to mp3 chores.

Are you recording on an audio track? (not a MIDI track)

.. sorry, had to ask.
If everything is set up to record correctly, that would likely be the user error that could cause it. Otherwise; do you see any sound register in the VU meter (Window-Show VU Meter)
If you play the SD2 and its sound is routed to the selected input, these meters should show signal on the two left side VU meters (input)
If not, audio input selection/routing is likely issue.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Mystery solved! When I went to play a tune the sound did not come out of my sound module but only mp laptop speakers. Looks like I have a defective usb port on the laptop. Must just be a short though because it still works off and on. I changed usb ports which also changed the port number. When i opened Real Band, it said that my midi driver device was not installed on my system. I went to the midi drive menu and got the drivers in the right place this time. MS Sound Mapper doesn't even appear as a choice now. Weird, huh? This is like the twilight zone. Record now works fine. At least next time, I'll know to check the usb ports. I think that moving the laptop around with the cables plugged in probably caused the problem over time. I think that next time, I'll get a desktop. Just sayin'...............

It's not the USB cable? They can go bad, though not often.

No, it's the port. I have a bad habit of moving the laptop around on the table with the cables still attached. This is mainly due to my eye sight. Over time the plugs have messed up some of the ports due to tension while moving. Changing the ports solved the problem. I am going to get a new desktop though--a Micro Express Micro Flex 23B. I've had this laptop for 6 years or so. It's barely able to handle Windows 7. It has served it's purpose very well though. In fact, my wife has a more recent Toshiba than mine and she has more problems than I do with hers which came with Vista. We both are now on win 7 though. The next machine has 8gb ram, 64 bit win 7, sata hd, upgrade sound card, and very new chip. Time to move on.
