If anyone is new to computer-based recording, I'd suggest Studio One by PreSonus. Even tho' I've used BIAB live for years, I'd never done any DAW recording until recently. You can do it all in Studio One, right through to mixing, mastering, CDs, mp3s, on-line posting, etc. within the same program.

You can do this all with nearly any DAW software today. What you cannot do with Studio One (the cheaper version) is use any VST/VSTi that are not directly from PreSonus. They turned off this very basic feature and you have to pay for the privilege to use any VST/VSTi that you may already own.

To me that makes Studio One a non-starter as I have a significant investment in time and money in a raft of VST/VSTi.

Studio One does come with a fairly full suite of built in effects and instruments, but so does every one of the DAW softwares on the market. I think it's a shame they turned this off in the base version of the software.
