Hiberfile.sys is a 12 Gb file that takes up 20% of my 60 Gb SSD. I am never going to use Hibernate. When I try to delete the file the system says I can't because it is "in use by another program" and to close that program and try again.
It is NOT set to read only. UAC is at a minimum and I am an administrator. I was walked through this once before but reinstalled Windows to solve another issue and the file is back. Help.

Interesting. My laptop has a Hibernate file of only 3 GB (and a pagefile of 4 GB). I do use Hibernate on occasion. I do not have an SSD in this laptop.
I just tried using a system utility editor to rename the file, and it would not let me. This is a program that usually lets me do anything, even stupid things. Same 'in use' error.

This, http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-delete-hibernation-file-hiberfil-sys/will tell you how to delete that file. All I did was to google ‘how do I delete hiberfile.sys on win7’ (no quotes). There are a lot of other urls to check it this doesn’t work for you. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I just found that, too. Not sure I'm willing to delete mine, but as I said, it's nowhere as large as Ryszard's.

I can not find that file on my 64 bit win7 system; yes I have hidden files turned off. I did disable hibernate in my bios so maybe it took it off then, don’t know. But if I did have it I would not delete it either.

I never understood the theory of why people even use hibernation. I have this debate with my users at work all the time. They undock, leave their desk to walk 50 feet to a conference room and they think they are saving battery by hibernating.
Personally I never turn my computers off. I'd rather let them run than boot every day and spin the hard drives. They have fans to keep them cooled, no reason to hibernate. I DO use a screen blanking screen saver on the laptops. On the desktops I just power the monitors off. Don't see a reason to hibernate, move all that cached data from RAM to hard drive and back again.

The size of hiberfile.sys is directly related to how much RAM you have. I have 16 Gb.

Turns out I didn't actually have to delete it. Once I turned off Hibernation the file was simply gone. Between that and pagefile.sys, which was 12 Gb in size and which I moved to D:\, I now have 60% of C:\ available for programs.

As I mentioned in the OP my main drive is an SSD (solid-state drive) which is only 60 Gb in size, so 'real estate' is pretty valuable. It's the only compromise I made on the system and should have been larger. I, however, would still delete an unneeded file of any significant size.

As I explained in another post, I often have complex setups for job-related tasks. It can take me anywhere from 7 to 10 minutes to boot up and start everything. Instead I may leave the machine in the same state for weeks at a time, hibernating (sleeping, actually) between uses. I use sleep only when connected to power or for short periods during transport.

My laptop a is three-year-old name-brand PC. I just replaced the mainboard, which failed after nearly constant use to that point. It cost what I paid for the thing originally. I was able to justify the cost, but obviously these things do have an 'expiration date.'

Now that's what I don't understand. A CRT consumes significant energy and will wear out, so it makes sense to turn them off or use a screen saver. A modern flat screen LCD or LED monitor uses very little power and has a MTBF that is tens or hundreds of times that of a CRT. I do use screen savers, but only as a security measure. (Okay, they're pretty, too.)

I only use a screen saver on my laptops because you can't turn the monitor off. On the 4 desktops I turn the monitors off.
As far as screen savers, do you find yourself actually sitting and watching the pretty screensaver very often?
I had a customer who constantly downloaded sreensavers and would call me once a month to remove a virus. Finally I explained that while I am happy to take her money every month, screen savers are pretty much stupid. If you are sitting and using the computer, you don't see the screen saver. If the screen saver is on, it goes off when you do as little as breathe on the mouse or keyboard, so short of a situation where you literally sit in front of the computer and do nothing but stare at the picture, why bother? Use the original screen saver. Turn it off. And screen savers don't even matter anymore with LCDs. The C:> image isn't going to burn into an LCD like it did on the phosphorescent tubes.
In an office situation I understand locking the screen when you walk away or using a time out screensaver, but at home, I really don't care if the dog sees my screen....

I haven't used a screensaver in many years. I was speaking for the masses.
1. I don't use anything on my DAW that could potentially interrupt audio timing. No automatic updates, screen savers, no screen blanking or powering down the HD, no scans, etc. Having read the TOS for Win 7 (have you? Look it up, even if you're not a user) I suppose I should disconnect the thing from the internet while DAWing as there's no telling when MS might choose to **** around with my system or what they might do.
2. I take security a little more seriously than most. My laptop is used for medical transcription. As such it is covered by federal HIPAA regulations, which carry steep sanctions for violations of patient confidentiality. Think $25,000 per incident. Even though I work from home it is password protected whenever I leave the keyboard. I don't even have speakers connected because someone could hear what I'm listening to. BIG no-no. Headphones all the way.

My screen saver is my digital photos folder, so it works like an ePhoto Album when it kicks in, changing pics about every 5 seconds. Always brings back great memories. New pics get added under the same main folder, so the random display does change over time..
