That $ sign rang a bell. I remember seeing it when I was trying to figure out system exclusive messages way back when I was mad and naive. LOL (a lot)

I've dug out my old books and it seems to stand for Status and Sub Status messages. I've only found it in the Yamaha sections though. It is also under the sections on sys exclusive Dump messages.

11110000 staus = $F0
ID = $43
s=substatus/n=channel number

I'm no expert on sys exc. It was interesting at the time but also like AAARRGH!
Maybe someone else can enlighten further.
