So, is he saying we should pay 5-10 bucks to download a song? Do that and you think piracy is bad now? I think he would go broke pretty fast.
And what you get now with the download does not require pressing a 45, labeling it, packaging it, shipping it, stocking it, etc. I don't think his 1960 analogy is apples to apples.

The fact that the 99 cents can be spent almost anywhere on the planet is where the change has occurred.
What was your size of your record collection in the 1960s or 1970s?
The world has flattened and there are many more people today selling 99 cent songs than in the 1960s. Sorry Vince Gill that you can't get as rich now as before; the wealth is spreading out to more people through the availability of both legal and illegal distribution.
I think the last line in his quote is the one farthest off-base. The economic model today encourages way more creativity than in the past. Long Tail economics are at play and the only folks really 'suffering' are those that were able to capitalize on a narrowly controlled distribution channel system of the past.
Vince, you can still be an artist - you just won't get paid as much for it. Welcome to the club....

Now, now. Let’s not get nasty to Vince.  By all accounts that I’ve heard or read, he’s a really nice guy.
I can appreciate what he’s saying. If he sells one song there’s probably dozens stolen through file sharing. At least in the “old days” it had to be stolen by someone going through the effort of making one cassette copy at a time. Now it can be made available to millions with an upload by one thief. It would have to be frustrating to the artist to be ripped off by so many "fans".

Hi Bob, I hope I didn't make Vince cry We have couple of song writers in our extended family who have made it big. Real big. Some others in the family labored in music writing and performing for years without much to show for it. Touching on another thread about getting songs noticed and published: The one young lady to whom I was referring to above, was a staff writer for a major studio. If I have it right, they had to write throwaway songs daily. I'm sure that their throwaways are far superior to anything that I have written. Which begs the question, why would they pay any attention to me? Don S.

I don't applaud the theft of music. But I do believe that the equalization of distribution, meaning that you or I can distribute at very little cost to ourselves ($1000 puts you with a hundred CDs and digital downloads on all major digital distribution points), is WAY more affordable than the effort to go through the old model of distribution.
I'm guessing Vince Gill is a nice guy as well. Sorry that the fart app costs the same as his song.
But none of us can really complain that we can't get our CD published any longer. Marketing doesn't even require record labels any longer.

This is what, 5 years old now?
What is more astonishing to me is that school districts look at music programs as the first thing they cut. I have a high school in my neighborhood. A couple of years ago, if you took the number of victories the football team had, add to it the number of wins the boys basketball team had, add to that the number of wins the girls basketball team had, add to that the number of wins the boys baseball team had, add to that the number of wins the girls softball team had, the total is ZERO.
When budget cuts came, guess what got cut?
Band and choral.
The enrollment at that school is so low that they had to walk the hallways asking kids if they wanted to play football so they had at least 22 players to have an offense and a defense without playing kids both ways. There was a player on the baseball team that, by agreement, was there only to go into a game if one of the 9 players who really played was injured and could not continue. Several of their games were called in the 4th inning when the deficit was 25-0 or worse.
They cut band and choral.
Okay, I will give you that the players on those awful teams learn to never quit and all that yada yada, but I have to ask what he ultimate value is of taking part of something that is doomed to fail. (They were not even CLOSE to a victory. Ever. None of the teams.) I have to think that the psyche of the average kid in the middle teens would be better served by taking part in a concert band that CAN get to a successful level. There's no opponent in music other than yourself. I mean, I went past that school on a football game night, and the parking lot was almost empty. When it's so bad that the PARENTS didn't even attend.....
Why is it that music and art are usually the first to go? We have some former teachers here who may have an opinion.
Know that I was a 3 sport athlete in high school so I have been on both sides of this topic. I also went to a football factory private high school and my group did not lose a game in my 4 years in the building. Also the demographics have changed and the population base is not like it was 40 years ago. The best athletes in the city WANTED to go to my school. We had more boys out for football than the male enrollment in the nearby school. Still, why cut music? Sports is not a revenue event when nobody attends the games.
I remember the old adage.... "A frill is something the neighbor's kid does."

My parents have dedicated many years to keeping music programs in the schools. It IS important, as many studies have shown. From donations to speaking to Congress, heading organizations and volunteering locally. In terms of the revenue from song sales, yeah thats right on the (no pun intended) money. That particular revenue stream is suffering.
But successful artists and musicians have figured out how to diversify their income streams. Touring, radio play, ring tones, sheet music, etc etc etc
