I still have some problems with the statement: "My single costs 99 cent [on the internet]. That's what s single cost in 1960."

in 1960 there were many positions included:
Studio (recording and mixing staff, musicians including main artist)
Authors' rights
Manufacturing the carrier (vinyl single)
Label's Distributing and Marketing cost
Local store's income.

in 2012 there are more or less the same positions.
Studio (recording and mixing staff, musicians including main artist)
Authors' rights
Manufacturing the carrier (mp3)
Label's Distributing and Marketing cost
Local store's income.

What I would like to know is: What is the percentage of cost for these positions per item?
I remember having read somewhere, sorry -- can't remember the source, that selling the 99 cent tracks does not include roylaties for musicians.

Best regards.
Guido

Came across this today, the outcome didn't really surprise me though.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/04/AR2007040401721.html

that was not only an interesting study in human behavior, it was also one of the best-written articles I've read in a long time. It made one profound observation after another for nearly the entire article.

I was especially intrigued by the statement that every single child who passed by wanted to stop and listen, but the parents whisked them away.

In the final conclusion, I think much of what we're talking about here has less to do with value or even appreciation for music as it does about how the priorities of the moment affect our choices and behavior.

Solomon said "There is a time for every purpose under heaven." People are inclined to prioritize whatever benefits them most at the moment. ("Benefit", in this context, means "helps me to survive")

Even a crummy sports program generates income for a school system, and will therefore be prioritized over a music program that costs more to maintain than it generates in return.

It is ironic to me that most Organizations are founded for the perpetuation of an ideal; but they are managed for the perpetuation of the organization.

The fact that the 99 cents can be spent almost anywhere on the planet is where the change has occurred.

What was your size of your record collection in the 1960s or 1970s?

The world has flattened and there are many more people today selling 99 cent songs than in the 1960s. Sorry Vince Gill that you can't get as rich now as before; the wealth is spreading out to more people through the availability of both legal and illegal distribution.

I think the last line in his quote is the one farthest off-base. The economic model today encourages way more creativity than in the past. Long Tail economics are at play and the only folks really 'suffering' are those that were able to capitalize on a narrowly controlled distribution channel system of the past.

Vince, you can still be an artist - you just won't get paid as much for it. Welcome to the club....

Scott,
I agree on every point in both of your posts. I think you've stated the current reality in the most positive way. Yes, things have changed... but the result is that more people have opportunity to market their ideas than in the past. This is true not only for song writers, but also for programmers of fart apps

As a creative person, I'd rather live in a world where anybody with a clever idea or product can self promote and make money without being totally ripped off by middle men. The old system is the outrage from where I stand. It consists of greedy promoters who dangle the lure of global distribution to entice hungry artists into signing unfavorable contracts so they can siphon away most of the profits for themselves. And in such a system, only those with unfavorable contracts get promoted... nobody else gets a shot, regardless of talent.

The current system is better; but I bet the middle men will find a way to stop the self promotion and require distribution to funnel through them again. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Another consideration is that you got TWO songs for your 99 cents, so songs were 49.5 cents in 1960. And 1st class postage in 1960 was 3 cents.

How does that 99 cents of 52 years ago translate to 2012 money? Look down this list and you see that the same 99 cents bought a 6 pack of beer in 1960. Or 12 jars of baby food. Or a pound of pork chops. Vince is old enough to know better.

Cut and paste:

How Much Stuff Cost In 1960

In 1960 a new house cost $12,700.00
In 1960 the average income per year was $5,315.00
In 1960 a gallon of gas was 25 cents
In 1960 the average cost of new car was $2,600.00
Misses Swinging Shifts Skirts - $5.00
Oxford Men's shoes - $12.95
Oranges: 89 cents for 2 dozen
Oven ready Turkeys - 39 cents per pound
Minimum Wage: $1.25
A Gallon of Milk: $0.95
1 Ticket to the Movies: $1.00
1 Dozen Eggs: $0.53
One regular size bottle of Heinz ketchup: 22 cents
One-ounce Hershey bar: 5 cents
Pound of pork chops: $1.03
Pound of sirloin steak: 85 cents
Six-pack of Pepsi: 59 cents
Can of shaving cream: 59 cents
Can of hair spray: 47 cents
Six-pack of beer: 99 cents!
Loaf of Bread: 20 cents
Fast Food Hamburger: 20 cents
Frozen French Fried Potatoes: 10 cents for 8 ounces
Gerbers Baby Food: 25 cents for 3
Ice Cream: 79 cents half gallon
Jello: 35 cents for 4 packs
Kraft Miracle Whip: 51 cents
Skippy Peanut Butter: 79 cents
Sugar: 38 cents for 5 pounds
Toothpaste Crest: 50 cents
Watermelon: 2 1/2 cents per pound
Bacon: 79 cents per pound

I know where he was trying to go, but when you compare the 1960 dollar to the 2012 dollar, it falls apart.
