Hello folks,

I am having a bit of an asio problem with realband, got the latest build of RB running windows 7 32 bit with an m-audio fast track pro.

When I am playing realtracks sometimes there is a loud hissing sound (without any music) which can last for a few seconds and then simply go away by itself.

I also have cubase 5 running asio (but obviously not at same time as RB) and it runs fine there when I import the realtrakcs .WAV files.

On the fast track pro properties in its control panel the sample rate is set at 256, sample rate is 44.1 sample depth is 24 bits.

I am also running the vsc dxi in realbnad but I assume the loud hissing sound is something to do with the asio setup in realband, as I say no problems in cubase when I run it with asio.

I've got a pretty fast quad core computer as well with 4 GB ram so I don't think its that either.

I want to stick with the asio in realband (though I know a lot of people prefer the MME driver) and the fast track is an ideal way for me to record into realband.

Any ideas really appreciated on maybe changing some settings in realband or the asio control panel to get rid of the intermittent loud hissing sound?

Thanks very much

I suggest the first thing to try is increasing the ASIO buffer from 256 to 512. It seems to work better if you access the M-audio panel through Real Band Audio Preferences. From AUDIO PREFERENCES hit the DRIVERS button, then the ASIO DRIVERS CONTROL PANEL button. This should take you to the M-audio settings.

Why it works better by this method is a mystery, but it's worth doing.

Get back to us if it still doesn't work.

ROG.

On my FastTrack Pro, I have have to change the buffer in control panel. It always seems to have it greyed out if I do it from within RealBand. When I installed the M-Audio drivers, it created an icon in Control Panel; I just select that, make the change, then go back into RB and check the setting and find that the changes have been made. A couple of extra steps but no biggie.

Thanks very much for your replies and your suggestions which I have tried to no avail.

After some further troubleshooting I have discovered what is causing the loud hiss and loss of music.

I think the problem (at least on my computer anyways) is not related to asio. The loud hiss and total loss of any music only happens when I use the scroll wheel on the mouse in the tracks window to quickly scroll up or down to the desired track, or to lenghten the display of the bars in tracks window. When I use the wheel on the mouse the loud hiss frequently happens with loss of playback music and will only stop once the scrolling has stopped.

If I use the vertical scroll bar in right side of real band and drag either up or down then the hiss won't happen.

Would be grateful if someone (who is using asio) could load a good few realtracks and then use the mouse wheel to see if they can replicate this problem in the tracks window.

Many thanks

Any time you interrupt your operating system you are going to get a pause. A mouse roll, a keystroke.... those events send an interrupt request (IRQ) to the operating system and stops what the OS is doing for that millisecond to fill that request. That was at the nexus of why I wanted to mix on a mixer and not on the computer.

The same scrolling problem exists in Band in a box when scrolling in the stylepicker(PG have told me they are aware of it) but for my computer anwyas is 1000 times worse in realband as described in my earlier post.

Load a bunch of realtracks 12 or more and I would bet it happens in tracks when using the mouse wheel.

Only workaround for me is not to use the mouse wheel and just use the vertical scrooll bar in right side of realband.

Would agree, the problem is the IRQ's that Eddie indicated. Seems to be related to video. The question is why these millisecond requests are overtaxing a quad core fast computer. A couple of things that come to mind from my expereince: are you using a wireless mouse? I have better luck with a wired USB mouse. Second, do you have the latest drivers for your video card? I had to play around with mine quite a bit for my nVidia card..actually had better performance with an earlier driver prior to their latest release.

Thanks for reply. No its an optical wired mouse and I am using the latest video driver.

Load about 12 realtracks and use the mouse wheel quickly to scroll up and down and maybe you will see what I mean.

update,

got this from Rob at PGmusic.

"I can reproduce this problem on my machine and will add it to the list for the developers to look at. Thanks!"

So its good they can reproduce it and pass it on to be fixed.

ASIO does not work properly in BIAB & RB.If I was a betting man I'd say that the ASIO portion of the code for BIAB & RB is at fault and should be looked at very carefully by the programmers.

Thanks for that John. As I use an m-audio fast track pro is there any other driver I could use to record into realband, and how do others including yoru good self hook up a mic or guitar to your computer if you are not using the asio hardware?

thanks again,
Musiclover

OK here goes. I use ASIO.BUT I use an older laptop that had the older AC97 soundcard. These soundcards did not have Native ASIO drivers. A friend I know from Holland, that I met through the KX Forums as one of the programmers, wrote Native ASIO drivers for these AC97 cards. He's a musician and an excellent programmer.I'll provide the link to his site. You'll notice that in the Rev. history is a mention of a fix that specifically applies to BIAB. That was at my request quite a while back. Peter sent Lex a copy of BIAB for experimentation and he was able to code around some of the ASIO issues that occur in BIAB.

Thanks a lot John.

you're the top man

I did try the KX drivers with my creative card ages ago on my old computer but to be honest I couldn't make head or tail of it.

I still use KX on my 7x64 machine. Lex built a set of drivers just for me that provide 8 separate outs using WDM without any complexity. Four pairs show up in RB and I choose them and that's it. No settings no mixer no hassle. The only problem is that they only work on the XP rig. He's trying to get a hold of a 7x64 machine so he can build me those as well. These are for playback with an Audigy 2 ZS Notebook card.
BTW his AC97 ASIO drivers are not KX. Same principal as the multi drivers. No settings to mess with except buffer.I use the internal card to record.Which is not often.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
