I have V-Vocal (and don't use it too much), but melodyne essentials is on sale for $50 here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/celemony-melodyne-essential

Essential does not have all the fancy stuff like DNA and polyphonic editing, but it handles the simple pitch correction quite well from what I read. I wonder if it works with Sonar 8.5.3 -- I'll guess I am going to find out.

Yes, highly recommended for any vocalist. It is eye-opening to actually "see" the notes you are singing. Very humbling also .

buying in at a reduced price qualifies you for an upgrade price later if you want DNA. And if you don't need DNA, $50 is a no-brainer for this product. IMO it is one of the 3 or 4 "Must have" products for every home studio

EDIT:
melodyne actually works as a plugin in Sonar, which means you can edit audio tracks from within the Sonar environment. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as a plugin with RealBand, so RB users must use the product as a standalone app

I have Essential and don't necessarily want DNA, but Assistant offers more voice pitch control like pitch drift
and vocal formant. So Assistant will be my next step - saw it for about $120 but no cash yet.

I use it as standalone.

What they said. I picked up Melodyne Essential last year, and it's way worth it. For fifty bucks? Jump at it, Kev.

A lot of products do a good job of pitch correction... but what sets Melodyne apart from all the others is its ability to let you edit audio at the note level, using the same note editing paradigm as Piano Roll.

As such, you can fix a lot more than pitch problems. And it is actually more intelligent than piano roll editing. For example, in piano roll,if you stretch a note to make it longer or shorter, it creates either a dead space between the edited note and the adjacent note, or it creates an overlap. Melodyne "knows" that if you change the starting or ending point of a note, the adjacent note needs to adjust its start point, end point , or length to accommodate... and it takes care of it automatically!

Therefore, You can actually quantize a badly timed audio track with Melodyne!

You can also change many more things with Melodyne that are not possible with other audio editors.

I got it and installed it this weekend. Of course, once I got it I read that it is only designated to be compatible with Sonar X1 and I have 8.5.3! But it seems to work in stand-alone mode and as a plug-in.

I loaded one tune and I was pretty surprised that my pitches were actually pretty close (ha,ha). I moved a few "fringe" pitches 100% "on-center", but the wavering around the pitch center stays there and it sounded natural.

One quirk I noticed right away: I looped a section in sonar, so I could turn the plug-in off and on to see what differences I could hear. Well, the Sonar looped -- but the melodyne kept going and going and going as if there was no loop set up. I hope I can figure that one out. I can live with it, but it was sort of annoying.

Thanks for the update Kevin! I was hoping you'd respond!
FWIW, I still have Sonar 6.0 and the current version of Melodyne works as a plugin even in a version that old. It may be that 100% compatibilty is only with Sonar X1 (which might explain your looping quirk)

you've been doing tghis for quite a while. I always thought you had a pretty good handle on your vocals. But it will still be useful as an all purpose editor

Maybe because you don't have Sonar X1? But I understand your annoyance. Its great when products work consistently within our established workflow procedures. I think there's another way to "hear the difference" but I'm not at my music PC at the moment, so I can't check melodyne.

But keep us posted

Kevin, Pat et al

Using Melodyne Essential with RealBand and Powertracks does require a modification in workflow.
Since "plugin" does not work, One must move the RB/PT vocal via a WAV to the "standalone" Essential. . . a minor
inconvenience for such a useful tool. Then re-import after changes are saved. I know you guys know this, but for the uninitiated who are thinking of using Melodyne and PG 's RB and PT, it's a great return for a small inconvenience.

Now I'm after upgrading to Melodyne Assistant.

Cheers lads - Ian

I got it and am still poking around.

It did confirm my suspicion that as I get older, I'm drifting closer to the cracks. An eyeopener.

Just went to the melodyne forum (man, there a lot of unhappy Sonar users!) and the looping issue is known. One guy had a good workaround, though.

You can set sonar to jump back to the starting point every time you stop (this seems to be my default behavior). So just start wherever you want and as soon as it gets to your desired ending loop point -- just stop sonar and the cursor will jump back. It is manual looping, but it should work OK. The main reason is that Melodyne takes the track that you have the plugin on and creates its own little universe to run it in (it has to analyze the entire track in melodyne to determine pitches and display the blobs) Based on what melodyne has to do, I can see how getting the loop to be in synch would be difficult.

I'll have to give the work around a try.

Sounds like a good reason to explore the Standalone Melodyne Essential.

I have yet to have it mess with tempo during pitch correction process or during "save as".

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
