I'd like to use this thread to let people know which Ipad music apps are good, and which ones are not worth the time, money or storage space.

I bought a pedal steel app (named PEDAL STEEL) that was useless, and an ERHU app (named CLASSIC ERHU) that I also thought was useless.

However, GEO SYNTH, SAMPLEWIZ and MORPHWIZ (all by the same group) are a lot of fun and potentially useful in a studio.

If you've wasted time on a lemon or found a music app that you really like, please post here

FL Studio looks like just the type of app that would work well with iPad's screen size.

At just before 9 minutes in, they show how to record automation with a filter - that feature alone should be studied in detail by PG as how to do automation recording.

I really shouldn't look in this thread because there are so many cool music apps for iPad - the ReBirth demo by Peff is really cool.

the common theme that I like in these music apps / glass interface is the way every aspect of music.. all parameters... can be "slid" to the correct spot. The automation filter isn't really that different from anybody elde's envelopes EXCEPT that you can intuitively move your finger in real time to get the results you want.

much the way some people drive in rush hour traffic, but I digress...

the other apps mentioned allow triggering notes while simultaneously sliding on the note to change volume, pitch, vibrato... it just seems more natural to me than most other digital ways to trigger notes.

I agree that that for nearly everyone elses automation it's similar. I'm saying that PG staffers need to look at this demo and see how they could preserve what they have built up over the decades, but open their minds to the way that a whole lot of other people think about music production on computers.

I've been automating filter cutoff frequencies and resonances for quite awhile, but it's still a bit difficult to record them without a good control surface (mouse doesn't count). The iPad is an incredibly flexible control surface. The fact that it's all self-contained is what is cool.

Right now, I have to train the plugins through my DAW, for which knobs/sliders control which plugin parameters. It doesn't always work smoothly because sometimes plugin devs have pre-determined which CC does what and sometimes those are pre-mapped to knobs and sliders on my midi keyboard (Oxygen 49). When that happens, I get a mess of stuff happening that I don't want happening. I like that with the FL Studio iPad app, it's an all-in-one thing. Heads off to check price to see if it's available for iPhone....

15 bux. Next iTunes card I get, that's where it's going...

after talking to some people who have the PC version AND the Ipad version, I’m going to get it for the PC rather than for the IPad. I think the IPad is most useful as a control surface... the apps themselves are intriguing, but IMO not really useful for recording. But the ability to trigger notes from an infinitely variable glass control surface is inestimably useful. I plan to pursue the goal of setting up the ipad strictly as a MIDI controller that gets used in conjunction with DAW apps on my music computer.

FWIW, FLStudio has a lifetime free upgrade policy. Pretty hard to beat. My son bought it when it first came out years ago,and he still gets free upgrades.. so the offer is legit.

Every now and then a music app breaks all the paradigms and does something in a way that is more intuitive and useful than other apps. PGMusic's apps are like that... and I think FLStudio is too, in a completely different way.
