Check audio drivers in the audio preferences area, (or click the 'a' in a circle icon)
Make sure you are using the correct driver for your card and not a generic driver
If you are using ASIO, try using MME and often that simple change will correct some issues(same audio preferences window)
You may have to set the audio buffers if you need to keep ASIO enabled to use your input device
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
Make your sound your own!
