Pat you might want to try this free utility program called Rkill . The link page explains what it does but in short it's a tool that is easy to use and kills known processes that stop the use of our normal anti-malware applications.

I once had some bad malware that disabled my virus protection and would not allow Malwarebytes to remove it. What Rkill did was shut down all process's that these malware programs use and then I was allowed to run malware bytes to remove it.
