Hello,
I have a BIAB 2012 song that contains some real tracks and some MIDI tracks, and when played in BIAB everything sounds fine. However, when I import the BIAB song into RealBand all the tracks are still there and all the VU meters move correctly during playback, but none of the MIDI tracks output any sound. The "MIDI Drv" configuration in RealBand is set for the "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" Driver, the "Re-Route MIDI playback to default Dxi/VSTi Synth" checkbox is checked, and the "Default Dxi/VSTi Synth" is set to CoyoteWT. These are the same settings I am using in BIAB, where I can hear all the tracks. What else might be wrong in my RealBand settings that are preventing me from hearing the MIDI tracks.
Thanks, Ray

Check RB Audio Prefs settings to see if it defaulted to ASIO (where BiaB may be using MME). Otherwise you seem to have things set correctly.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

rharv,
I don't mind admitting that I'm somewhat bewildered by all of this driver, synthesizer, etc. business. Let me tell you about my setup and maybe you can explain things a little to me if you wouldn't mind. I don't have an external MIDI device so I must rely on whatever is available in software. I have a generic ASUS sound card, the standard Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, the CoyoteWT that comes with BIAB, and the ASIO4ALL driver. If I select the ASIO4ALL driver in BIAB I get no sound output at all so I've been using MME and CoyoteWT and everything seems to work fine. In RB, however, as I explained previously there is no output for the MIDI tracks. I tried selecting the ASIO4ALL driver in RB but then I get no output at all. However, I do get a message that says, "Audio and/or VSTi/DXi Output will be silent. The ASIO4ALL driver is not connected, likely due to your using a soft-synth (like GS-WaveTable) for MIDI." So that's were I am now. Does this mean I need to get a hardware synth for MIDI to use RB? I'm unclear as to why everything seems to work together in BIAB but not in RB.
Thanks, Ray

Hi, Ray - This may or may not work. Here's one thing to try (based on my experience with my laptop). When I'm using MME, my laptop's soundcard switches nicely between headphones and speakers. However, when I use ASIO4ALL, it treats the two as two separate sound devices. So, I have to go into ASIO4ALL and tell it to use the other one. Since the headphone port is listed first (and it's called "Dock", so it took me awhile to figure it out), and the speakers (called "Line Out", even though my computer has no "line-out") is listed second, it selects the headphones by default. So, I have to go into the ASIO4ALL control panel and choose "line-out" to listen through the speakers. I don't know if this is your problem, but it's what happened to me when I appeared to get no sound from ASIO4ALL. Another thing I would also try is to download MIDIYoke NT and install it. It installs virtual MIDI ports. I can then select MIDIYoke 1 as my MIDI port and there will be not conflict between the Microsoft synth and the Coyote WT (which uses the same sound file). Here are some screen shots for my system; obviously you would have to substitute corresponding settings from your system.

John - your screenshot tut is fantastic!
one caveat, tho, unless he's installed MIDIyoke then that last step won't work - MIDIyoke would have to have been downloaded and installed - it's not a program that comes with RB or BIAB. But it's also not necessary for his situation.
you can NOT choose a MIDI output and RB/BIAB will complain and ask if you are sure, but that's OK as long as you have coyote (or some softsynth) selected for your MIDI output.

I referenced the MIDIYoke earlier in the textual part of the the thread. Since he wants to use Coyote, I would recommend MIDIYoke (or any virtual synth port). Plus, MIDIYoke actually does allow you to work with other applications by passing MIDI data through.

Since he said he was using MME, I don't see why ASIO4All would come into play.
If the dropdown is set to MME, I don't think ASIO4All shows up as a selection, does it? It doesn't here. So if OP gets ASIO4All message, he is not using MME.
I'm thinking this is where the problem lies. Make sure MME and the same drivers are selected as in BiaB. In the Audio Prefs window or tab, not MIDI.

John,
Thanks for the detailed instructions. You obviously put a lot of effort into producing them. I tried to install MIDIYoke but it wouldn't install. I assume it's because I'm using 64-bit Windows 7. However, I found another virtual MID port application named LoopBe30, which did install properly and did provide the MIDI ports. Although I was able to set it up the way you described and select the MIDI port, I still get the message that says "Audio and/or VSTi/DXi Output will be silent. The ASIO4ALL driver is not connected, likely due to your using a soft-synth (like GS-WaveTable) for MIDI.", and there is no sound. What I ended up doing just to get past this problem was simply generating a WAV file for each MIDI instrument in BIAB, then importing them into RB. It's not a great solution but at least it will let me move on.
Thanks, Ray

Hi,
After switching MIDI Output Drivers, you need to close the application and re-open it, and then ASIO4ALL should work.
Basically, the alternate MIDI driver has to already be selected when you launch the program.

There's always that elusive last step, isn't there?

I typically not only restart the application but also reboot after any changes that don't appear to be working. Neither of these helped in this case. I suspect it's my own operator error somewhere along the line. Has anyone here used LoopBe30 succesfully with RB on Win7 64-bit?

When you tried to install Midi-Yoke, did you do so as administrator. I've got it working on three different machines here with no problems. Of course, it's a 32-bit app, so it won't work with 64-bit programs. But since PGMusic programs are 32-bit, it's not a problem.
I would try to right-click on the .msi file for MIDIYoke and select Run as Administrator. Just a thought.
