Very nice setup. Can't be afraid to lug a little gear. I'd rather lug gear and sound the way I want or I'll just stay home.

Well said John, as nothing beats that feeling (well almost nothing) of being satisfied with the way you sound when that 1st tune is kicked off. Musicians, we are indeed a finicky breed.

Have to admit, I am sometimes a little overwhelmed, bringing all the gear and setting it all up and supplying the talent... no roadies, no sound engineer on the board, no one to do sound checks, no one to tune and hand me my guitar, just quick jump on stage, setup and play, then tear down and get off so next group can setup and repeat...

I actually had a very bad experience last gig where my mixer get "mixed up" and there was no sound for the first 10-15 minutes of my stage time since I just could not figure it out ( don'd know how that button got pushed??). A very bad start to the show. So I am always trying to simplfy, but it ain't easy.

The thing I don't get, and this comes down to a matter of preference, is why you guys want to haul a computer out when you could dump the stuff onto an iTouch. I can name a dozen guys around here who do that

One night at a songwriter night, a guy went up to do his 3 songs and i knew he had an iPhone rather than an iTouch, so between his second and third song, I called him.....

Note to self ........... At songwriter night, Airplane Mode On!!!!

Well, I became a Droid last week, but I could still use the iPad for it that eliminates the possibility of another smart ass such as myself calling me during a song.

Hey, I was gonna call him DURING a song!!

One of my best friends uses an iPod Nano for his live show. 2 speakers, 2 stands, a powered mixer, a mic and a guitar. He is set up/torn down in 10 minutes.

Eddie,

To answer your question, from my perspective at least I will keep carrying the laptop until I can run BIAB Live (not from WIFI) from a smaller device because I don't like converting to mp3s. Also I love to have the option to go back into that arrangement and make changes without having to save to mp3 again. Does that make any sense?

Makes perfect sense Danny. And a lot of it has to do with what you do. Remember, you gig live. I RARELY play outside the home and when I do it's 3 songs at songwriter night, and my originals, once they are down, are pretty much going to stay like they are. Of course I don't erase the WAV and Real Band files so I can make changes if I like, but I rarely revisit. The song tells a story, and once my story is told, it's behind me.

MP3s save at 320 have SO little sonic difference from WAvs that I'd bet an iced tea that if I played 10 songs nobody would be able to tell which 3 were WAV and which were MP3. By the time you blast them through a PA system..... Everybody supports the bandwagon party line about compressing and all the rhetoric about response and lossy formatting and all the yada yada that goes with the gospel according to the PG Forum, but honestly, it's just like the snobs who claim to know when a system is using Monster cables. Yet they couldn't tell the difference in a comparison test that used, in one test scenario, a coat hanger.

As my southern friend would say, honey hush.....

Eddie,

I am with you 100% regarding hearing any discernible difference, especially in a party atmosphere I am just too lazy to go through the steps to take BIAB from, well BIAB to mp3. Besides I am always tweaking my arrangements and thats just the way I roll.

Edited portion: Honey Hush, this was in a line of an old blues song that I can't remember. Thanks for sticking that in my head!

Talkin' Woman Blues by Albert Collins - recently covered by his former drummer turned left handed guitar player Coco Montoya. I think he has it on his album called Got A Mind To Travel, another Albert Collins tune.
