I know that the ipad mounted on a stand is used by some to provide lyrics and chords to songs and can probably provide backup music if made ahead of time. And even has a few nice programs for viewing individual tracks. I still can't justify getting one though. (I would just "put up with" my using bulky macbook-LIMB)
The words and lyrics can be easily mounted with a cheap clip holder which i use now (unless you were doing requests and you need a thousand songs immediately at your disposal).
Occasionally I would like to have some backing tracks play and since the ipad is ruled out as a very expensive and delicate (and amazing)toy, I was wondering if anyone uses the cheaper tablets to provide any kind of backup music and also for reading lyric/chords? Are their any programs that you can view the individual tracks as wav files) and adjust the volumes on the fly? I am not looking to record (nice but not necessary) as this would be done ahead of time in the convenience of my home using the desktop and BIAB , power tracks etc. And then just converting the tracks to wav for use on the tablet. (if i didn't want to adjust/mute the individual track levels I could just use a 15 dollar mp3 player for "set in stone" backup music.
So, has anyone any advice on the what tablets can do and probably more importantly, are there any apps to play and see the backup tracks as mentioned for adjusting/muting on the fly? It looks like they are starting to come down in price.

I recently bought an android based tablet. part of my intended use was for displaying sheet music at the keyboard.
but I would never use it as a backing track device because of the low quality soundcard. But then again, I wouldn't use a macbook or laptop for that reason either unless I had a firewire or USB soundcard connected to it. AFAIK, however, there are no drivers yet available for USB soundcards for tablets.
IF the drivers become available (and I don't know why they wouldn't eventually) for my MOTU for example, I would certainly consider using the tablet for an output for backing tracks.
but as long as I'm stuck with the onboard sound of the tablet, no deal for me.

Kristen for live shows the biggest problem with sound is the bass. You can create your MP3's in stereo with just bass on the left channel for example and control your mix. Just use a stereo splitter from your laptop and run each one into individual channels of your PA. I did some experimenting a few years ago when I used a laptop and Biab live and that worked pretty well. Some songs were better with bass and drums together on the left channel and everything else right.
This keeps everything clean and simple. More complex is Silvertones John's way of using the Gigaport HD as his interface from his laptop. It outputs 8 individual tracks to a regular physical mixer. That setup would give you absolute control over each track. Check out his last few threads. He's posted pic's of his setup and describes this in detail.

Kristen & Bob,
The only thing I do different is keep the drums panned at "0" dead center with the bass a little to the left -10 -15 as with my setup this gives me the best stage presence. Of course YMMV.
