Pat, you did not factor in the "Cheap Slovenian" factor. Slovenians, as a nationalized trait, are not permitted to EVER throw anything away that once had value.
I wonder if I can find a buyer for this motherboard with the Pentium 100 chip? And these size 10 Bauer hockey skates? The tough one will be that non-working chest freezer in my basement...
Geeze it took me 2 years to throw away an old synth that had absolutely no value even for parts to the most sentimental collector....

All I'm sayin' is... post the junk on CL and see what happens.
When I replaced my oil furnace with a hybrid gas/heat pump system, I wanted rid of the old oil tank, so I half jokingly posted it on CL. Almost immediately it sold. The guy who bought it cuts them in half and makes huge barbecue grills that he sells to organizations that raise money via cookouts. NEVER in a million years would I have thought that thing was sellable.
When you sell the old motherboard, list it as "vintage" or "hard to get". For some reason those words have the same effect on CL shoppers as Karo syrup has on ants

Sadly, "vintage" would be the best word to describe ME, as would "hard to get"......

[he upgrade prices for existing users are (IMO) VERY generous here. I've never paid anything close to $300 for an upgrade. There's usually a DL only version for $99, and that solves your problem with USB drives piling up.
$99 for the audiophiles version, I don't think so, witch by the way can't be downloaded

Reg, why bother with audiophiles... ? Don't get them... LOL... 99% of people won't be able to hear a difference. JMHO.

I think that threads like this have little or no impact on PGmusic's thinking, and I have joined in and maybe even started a few like this in the past. Pgmusic will do what PG wants to do because they always will get people to buy the new realtracks, Even Pat Marr seems like he is half reaching for his wallet already for the mid year upgrade I'm seriously thinking of calling a halt to the upgrades myself, way I look at it is, biab has come a long way, has all the features I want, I have a tonne of realtracks and styles, and what little music is in me, if I can't express it with the biab tools I have already got, no amount of realtracks or extra features is going to make one iota of difference. Opinions vary and no doubt there are many who want their twice yearly fix and can't wait for that new announcement to be made in site. martin

I agree Martin. The purpose of the thread isn't really to convince them of anything. What they're doing is already successful, and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'm the kind of obsessive thinker who can't let go of an idea until I say it out loud.

actually, I am. Without saying too much personal information that nobody really needs to know, this particular year the mid-year upgrade will be more timely for me than the December upgrade. Each person gets to make upgrade decisions for themselves. It isn't as though any company can force their customers to buy anything, EVER. If a person sees no compelling reason to part with his cash in order to obtain a product, he won't buy it, no matter HOW good the deal might be.

All true statements Martin. I'm at that same place with a bunch of other products; but I'm still interested in the developmemnt of PGMusic products. And, it's cheaper to stay current than it is to miss a few updates then try to get current again later when a new feature that I want is offered.
But having said all that, it's worth noting that everything you just said would never need to be said on the forum of a product that offered "Lifetime free updates". Once a person makes a CONSCIOUS DECISION to stop updating, the likelihood that he will ever send money to the company again becomes smaller and smaller with each passing year. (partly because most companies have a higher price to get back on the bandwagon for anybody who hasn't stayed current with the updates.) Such policies do reward the faithful customers; but in a sense, it unnecessarily raises the bar of re-entry for anybody who has enjoyed the product in the past, but for whatever reason missed a few updates.
In the "lifetime free updates" paradigm, all customers would stay on the bandwagon.. and the opportunity to DL their "free update" would always bring them back to see what's new.(In contrast, once I made my decision to stop updating Sonar, I stopped following its development. I don't read their ads or anything... my mind is now closed to the product. That's what happens when you come to a split in the highway and a decision is forced regarding which path to take)
But if the customers never have to make such a decision, when they come back for their free updates and listen to the real track demos and hear what people are saying on the forum, human nature will take over. We all want to be included in a good thing.

True, the winds of change may be blowing through the computer world and you may be right, down the road midi may not be part of it. For performers there should still be all the keyboard workstations but consider that lots of folks still use a 10 year old OS for music so if Win 9 has no midi there's still Win 7 or Apple but if they give it up too we're still talking at least 10-15 years before it becomes a major problem. You know PG will not sitting still all that time and who knows what kind of fantastic audio manipulation will be available then?
my interpretation of the article that was posted about Microsoft's support of MIDI is as follows:
I thought he was differentiationg between support for MIDI hardware (which he seemed to regard as becoming obsolete) as opposed to MIDI software, ie. soft synths, which he seemed to think were the future.
I don't think MIDI is dead or will be anytime soon. I do think that the current abundance of RAM and processing horsepower have made it possible for soft samples to surpass the quality of hardware based samples. Survival of the fittest means that the more powerful option will survive and the other will become a smaller player and eventually exit the stage.
Which might explain the recent changes to the mixer allowing multiple soft synths. Apparently PGMusic already knows where all of this is going, and they are already positioning their products for the future.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
