Greetings. What Jazz RealPack or Realtrack set should I get for straight ahead blowing Jazz with Piano?. Also,I am guessing that real tracks cannot play a written out melody part,is that correct? Tanks.

All of them. Not joking here, all of them.
If you're like me, I do pretty much all jazz styles except for the real old 30's stuff. All the jazz RT's are really good from the acoustic pianos, to the Jeff Lorber electrics, all the guitar stuff, acoustic bass, all the soloists, the B3's both with and without pedal bass. The list goes on and on. These are only the straight ahead tracks, then there's the modern "smooth" jazz, the pop funk jazz, the latin jazz especially the latin percussion Real Drum tracks. Man, I'm cookin now. I want to write about all of it but I think this is enough.
You want them all, trust me on this. One of my favorites has turned out to be the hip hop jazz RD. Those drums really work well with a lot of newer stuff. Just the other day I threw them onto Another You just for fun. Sounded great. Jazz is all about improv anyway, you can spend days mixing different styles of jazz RT/RD's and come up with some very cool stuff. The jazz group I've been with for over 10 years started doing a hip hop feel for the head of Well You Need'nt and then hard swing for the solos. That hip hop head really cooks. We also do a sort of James Brown funky guitar thing on Funny Valentine. Who needs to keep doing everything stock for 30 years? Anyway these RT's will really open your eyes to different possibilities.

Another You LMAO....how 'bout hiphopping backup for Dophin Street...??? I remember trying to sing Misty with a backup band in Jamaica doin' that backbeat Raeggie thing!! Got to the bridge, ..."can't you see that you're leading me on..." and I thought to myself, "they're doin' more than that...they're leading me off a cliff". I still got a bottle of Rum for the effort!? I can see and agree with your overall comments....but I don't want no hip-hopper vaulting up on stage and knocking me off my wobbly legs with a leg spinner move.

Hi Bob,
I'm new. Do you have any samples of the work you described above? Would love to hear some!

That happened to me. I was doing a ballad, Europa, and suddenly the band switched to funk. Boy, was THAT one fun! Then again, funk is fun!
Also, I bet there's an easier way to get back to a message thread than I'm using now (I click the crossed fingers but I guess I'll figure it out sooner or later.

Hey GDaddy, I did a Raggae version of Take 5 in four about 20 years ago well before everybody and his dog did different covers of it.
There's nothing wrong with tradition either. Another sax guy I work with is one of those, he likes all the standards stock and slow with feeling. That's fine, it's all good in fact I like doing Round Midnight or Body and Soul just like they were done back in the day. Nice slow ballads. Oth, a sax lady we use sometimes has a killer samba funk version of Body and Soul that'll knock your butt in the dirt.

Yeah, I do "Body and Soul" and "Take Five" with Techno beats.
The reason I asked is that I don't have a lot of money to spend and want to get the most basic all around useful set.I play bass to it so I just want good Piano and Drums, basically, for swinging standards. Thanks for the info.

You will have to look at all the different packages of RT's and see what you want. I can appreciate that money can be tight but after you realize how many you want it may be cheaper to just get everything even if that includes some stuff you'll never use.
Start with anything with jazz in the title. All the jazz basses, piano's, guitars, vibes, organs, the soloists, all of that. Then there's the pop jazz RT's. How many times do you use shuffle beats for some jazz stuff? You will probably want all the rock and blues things because they have all those shuffles. Then there's some country styles. There's some very useful stuff there too.
What a lot of folks don't realize is when it comes to the Real Tracks/Drums, all the styles are really just suggestions. You can mix any RT/RD together regardless what style you're using. All you really need to pay attention to are the tempo's and time signature. Too many people just work with what any given style gives them because that's what all the Biab advertising says. Pick a style and go. That's fine but it's very limiting.
Biab 2012 allows you to put different RT's on any instrument track on a per bar basis. Same for the RD's on the drum track. During testing last year one person created a song that had something like 20 different RT's in it. She changed the whole feel of the song like 6 or 8 times. You do this by clicking on any bar and hitting F5. In that window you can put any RT on any track starting at that bar. When you really think about those possibilites you soon realize you want as many different RT's as you can get.
Carlos Arellano is PG's spanish language forum moderator and is a killer guitarist. He created a Biab demo song called Latin Cowboy that is a Santana kind of thing with country fiddle solo's thrown in. Very cool you should check it out.

Carlos also recorded several excellent RealTracks of jazz fusion soloing. 'Killer' is right.
