That song is actually in 12-8 and so the "and" of the chord isn't actually an 8th not off the beat, but two tripletized 8th notes. I would suggest trying a 12/8 (or 4/4) swing style and see if that makes a different.
| A/D : ^G/D | is what the bar should look like, and with a swing style invoked, the off-beat should sound right.
