I just got a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB audio interface which finally completes my home studio setup the way I always wanted. Here's a graphic of the setup.

The Saffire 6 is fantastic. All the annoying little problems I've had with BiaB are gone. Amplitube works with ASIO. The guitar tuner works from within BiaB while using ASIO. I can send tracks out to a channel strip for recording with hardware FX. I'm a happy camper.

Note: BiaB doesn't deserve the blame for many audio issues. This proved to me that poor drivers were responsible for most audio issues.

Anyway, if any of you want to diagram your setups, whether to share here or to document your system in case of future problems, you can use my program. It's available for free on the BiaB wiki downloads page.

I hope you find it useful. I programmed it originally to document my PC network in my lab. With some minor changes it worked really well for my audio system as well.

It is a 32 bit app though so if you are using Win 7 64bit it'll need to run in compatibility mode or whatever they call it in Win7 these days.

Anyway, if it works for you you'll need to post a daigram of your system so we can all see.

Do you actually simultaneously record all of those inputs on the mixer?, because the mixer looks like it's only providing 2 channels output through the tape-out to the saffire.

If you aren't simultaneously recording all those mics, the Ketron, the bass, then why not run them direct into the saffire when needed?

Well I can simultaneously record all channel strip input from the mixer but not to separate tracks unfortunately. The advantage is I can monitor the control room which mixes tape input and channel strips while recording just the input to the channel strips. I generally record my bass or vocals this way. The nice thing is no computer power required to monitor.

The other thing is I can output a track from my PC to a channel strip and record with external FX. Before getting the saffire I had to mute all other tracks so I couldn't hear the whole mix. I understand there may be ways to do this in the PC but I prefer external moitoring.

Oops, forgot to answer this.

I had the mixer long ago. So it's nice to keep everything hooked up ready to go. No need to change cables. All I do is move a slider or push a button. Lazy I know... lol

Another nice thing with this setup is if I'm not recording I can just press the tape to mix button and BiaB outputs to my powered monitors. Then I can play my bass out the amp with BiaB from the monitors. All without any cabling changes.

How do you get those "arrow head" connectors plugged into the hardware?

Ducking and running!

Looks Great!

Nice setup Paul. Have you tried recording vocals through the Focusrite Preamps? They are excellent.

Thanks. I'm really happy to have this setup finally. It's what I've been after for years. Now if only it could add some talent. Oh well.

I see you got an answer before I could reply. Anyway, I put the download on the wiki page instead of providing a direct link because I want to encourage people to contribute to the wiki. I hope you'll consider that. The more people that contribute the more value the site will have.

Thanks Bob.

I haven't tried a mic directly into the saffire. However, I do find the preamps are great. There's plenty of headroom for my tape out from the mixer and the signal is very low in noise.

If and when you do try putting the mics directly into the saffire, I think you will find that you'll forget the mixer pretty quickly!

Cool, just googled images of much of my gear. Used a screen capture to snap a picture and then save them as .jpg files into the folder.

Yep, that's how I got all the little generic images I included in the folder. I didn't bother getting the exact images for my diagram; just representative ones.

I guess I'll have to try that one day. The recordings I've been getting are good enough for what I need though. I have to say the Saffire is a great piece of equipment. Wish I'd bought it long ago.
