I will be travelling in the US (Boston, NYC) during Some of July and August this year. I have an Unlocked iPhone 4S that should work with any carrier... Canadian service providers would charge me an arm and a leg to use/roam my cell-phone while in the US (per minute voice, email, or data use.) I am thinking of getting my hands on a pay-as-you go US plan w/a SIMM Card for my iPhone, to use it while I am there.... I do have few friends in Boston or NYC who would be able to buy this locally -- 'pretending' it is for them and ship it to me before I drive into the US... as I've heard such plans may not be available to visitors...
Does anyone have an idea which provider and which plan would be the best one to purchase? Hurry please, I'd need to get organized ASAP as mailing service could be slow from US to CANADA.

Dick,
Why not just stop at the first WalMart, Best Buy, Target, large convenience store after crossing the border?
They all sell disposable phones with pay as you go plans.

Bob has it right. And the phones are pretty much disposable, so when you are done, toss it into a trash can somewhere, or hand it off to someone else who wants to keep buying minutes. Email everybody who may call you with that number, and go from there.

I don't know if this is still true, but I think the pay-as-you-go phones connect to whatever carrier is around.
If you are talking about choosing one of the four major carriers and you want the best reception and data speed, in most major cities except California, AT&T seems to be better. In rural areas, Verizon is likely to work in more places. Exceptions to this abound, of course.

I can state from 10 years of experience that Verizon's technical service is virtually bulletproof. I have never found myself without access except during a storm (a tower went down). Highly recommended. VZN were the first to implement wireless broadband and, IMO, have better coverage for that still. Good luck with your decision and with your trip.

You might find that simply pre-paying for service with your carrier is still going to be cheaper than all of the hassle associated with trying to get a phone locally. How much are they planning to charge you during your visit?
I traveled to Toronto for a few days in May and I have ATT service here, and it connected me with Bell service in Toronto, but data rates were sky-high. I didn't use the data plan.

My relatives buy a cell phone in the US (Port Huron here), that has very cheap flat rate cards you can use ANYWHERE. HERE and there.
So my brother has an area code in California which looks cool, and he can just use his credit card to add 50 bucks to it when it's low, he gets an e-bill for that phone only and our provincial government pays for that cell phone because he works for them and it's easier or something.
I'm going to get one next time I'd down to visit my friend Antonio Alto. He used to sing higher but he aged. They call them throw aways, which is what the Blue Jays do with baseball games.
