You might find that simply pre-paying for service with your carrier is still going to be cheaper than all of the hassle associated with trying to get a phone locally. How much are they planning to charge you during your visit?
I traveled to Toronto for a few days in May and I have ATT service here, and it connected me with Bell service in Toronto, but data rates were sky-high. I didn't use the data plan.
