I don't believe there has ever been any formal documentation of the BiaB file format. If that's the case, I'm impressed that it was able to read that file at all.

I'm really hoping that BiaB supports MusicXML at some point.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

PS I tried adjusting "New Line Each" as you suggested, but couldn't get it to go to zero. A setting of 1 didn't fix the problem of displaced chords.

Hi Foxy,

I understand Support staff is currently looking at this issue. There may be an off-chance that BB 2012.5 is just around the corner. Maybe PG development takes the chance coming up with a fault free version in that respect - and provides a viable patch for BB 2012 down the road.

It would potentially be good to post your troublesome file somewhere, just to give those potential beta testers some food.

A lot of us folks here sure do hope that PG Music would come up some time with a thoroughly brushed up Notation engine, supporting compound time signatures such as 5/4 ...

Keep fingers crossed

I've already submitted the problem file directly to Support, but I take your point about beta-testers, so here's a link to the file:

If I were PG, I would create a Premium Add On notation capability and charge for it...just like they charge for RealTracks...if users WANT enhanced sound. Ditto for enhanced notation and for the same reason....COST.

This may be a much more viable suggestion now. I just read yesterday that as of Aug 1, Avid has shut down further development for Sibelius and all the programmers walked out en masse. Either that or this was simply face saving and they were let go but whatever, Avid is still selling it and apparently there is enough code in the system to allow for some bug fixes but that's it. It might be worth it for PG to step in with enhanced notation for a price. The basic engine is pretty good and the note entry system is one of the best out there imho but it does have it's share of these weird things. People have complained about these things for years including me at least 6-7 years ago and I could be wrong but I don't think there has been any development of the notation engine at all.

Just downloaded and checked it, I get much the same results as you from this songfile, the Chords associated with the TAG are not where they should be.

BUT -- At first I could not get the Songfile as downloaded to even PLAY the full TAG ending, it played maybe two bars of it and ended. Looked at the Leadsheet View and there were only the two bars displayed there, although the chords were above 'em where they should be. I had to UNFreeze the file, hit play and regenerate and then it played the whole TAG at the end as you entered things.

I suspect this to be a simple matter of a corrupted songfile, but since the masters at pgmusic development have the file also, we should defer to them in order to get to the bottom of this one, IMO.

Bob, I read that about Avid too. The article I read also said they have the code ready for the next release, so they can act like nothing has happened for another year or so. They will take in the money and spend little on overhead, without their customers knowing they are buying a lame duck product!

This *might* be a sign that Sibelius has matured to the point where there isn't much left to add to the thing, dunno.

I do know that I'm still chugging along using my rather long-in-the-tooth Sibelius Version 4 and am still able to publish with it, no complaints.

I found something, at least with BIAB 2011.

I downloaded the song file and tried changing a few things. If the number of repeats is set to 4 or 5, the problem occurs. But if set to 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 the chord symbol shows up in the correct spot. Pretty strange problem.

Not exactly a fix, as the number of repeats wiould have to be set to something other than what was intended, but should be a clue to the source of the problem.

Thanks, Mac and megafiddle.

I've previously had problems exchanging files with a colleague who has the same version of BIAB and the same selection of RealTracks as I have - it seems neither of us can rely on being able to use files the other has put together without unfreezing and re-generating. This usually shows up as a file which works on my computer playing as drums and MIDI only on his, and vice versa. I'm not sure if this is so much due to "corruption" as to incompatibility of the files created on one PC with another.

As I said in #368999, I think the displaced chords problem lies in the (implementation of the) algorithm used to determine the position of the chords on a leadsheet, which doesn't work correctly when the end-repeat mark doesn't come at the end of a line. Without knowing what's goes on within the black box of BIAB, we can end up like the medieval physicians who recommended bleeding for a bewildering variety of ailments - ascribing survival to the treatment and death to some methodological failure.

The folks at PG Music know what's in the black box, and now that the error has been drawn to their attention they can surely home in on it quickly.
