RB 2010 (4). Win 7
When I request "Convert to compressed file", RB apparently thinks it did it because it creates an MP3 folder of the proper name, but the folder is empty. WMP tries to play the file but doesn't find anything.
I saw reference here to the need for a decent MP3 codec but I'm not very smart. Advice, please, on how to acquire such a codec and link it to RB.
thanks
Frank

Hi Frank.

The command you need is AUDIO - EXPORT HIGHLIGHTED SECTION. You've then got the option to export as wav/wma/mp3/mp4/mp4a.

If you're working on a multi-track file, you'll need to merge the tracks to a stereo wav file and then import it back into RB. Alternatively, you can get a separate program to convert the wav file - there are lots of free ones available.

Thank You, ROG . I'll try that, seems to make sense. I have since downloaded something called fre:ac (per advice here) that may work. But probably not linked to RB.

You might want to look at a Codec pack. LAME MP3 is probably the best known, but if you are a novice and don;t know about Linux tarballs etc. it can be a little dense to install. You will need some kind of codec to render .mp3 files.

Hi Frank,

If you install Fre:Ac, it will also install LAME.DLL (a freeware driver for creating mp3s; it has an excellent reputation.)

It sound like you might have read my post under the "Tips And Tricks" forum on using Fre:Ac to create mp3s. If not, I suggest you have a look at it as it will help. You can find it at the below link.

You're right about Lame. I tried a couple of years ago to get into it but was not able. My skills are no better now!!

Yes, it wa your post that pointed me to fre:ac. I've yet to open the program and I have yet to study your post in depth. That's next as soon as I get time.

Thanks

Hi Frank,

It's not necessary to know anything about Linux and how to operate LAME from a grassroots level. The Fre:Ac program provides a really good front end to interface between LAME and Fre:Ac.

Similarly, my experience these days is that as long as the LAME.DLL file sits in the root level of a program's directory, the programs themselves often have a graphics interface that makes using LAME very easy.

For example ...

If you put the LAME.DLL file in the \bb directory, it's then possible to render a file in BIAB to an mp3. When choosing to do this, you'll eventually be presented with a dialogue box that offers a huge range of choices (please see the image below). Usually for mp3s, 44100 Hz and 128 kbps (stereo) is a reasonable quality. Better quality is obtained with higher values.

Regards,
Noel

Hello Frank.

Generally after I generate the stereo WAV using RB, I import it into the free Audacity (latest version is 2.x I think) and generate my MP3s and WMAs in there - Audacity uses LAME. Aud will also allow you to trim your files, add info tags etc - a very handy program for final things such as exporting various compression formats... and there are quite a few different ones.

It's the only part of my music production that I don't use PG Products for.

Cheers - Ian

Another big +1 for using Audacity.

hey thanks Noel! I didn't know that! In fact I think there was a wish list item not long ago suggesting that a way be implemented to use LAME with BIAB.. and it was possible all along!

(Which prompts me to ask how you knew that?)

I have a very early version of Goldwave (circa 1998) to thank for that. Once when I went to create an mp3, it told me that I needed to have a suitable mp3 driver sitting in the root directory of Goldwave. I've since discovered that many programs use lame.dll this way

That being said, I seem to recall recently reading somewhere that the latest versions of Windows Media Play include an mp3-writing codec. That makes the above now obsolete!

All the best,
Noel
