Richard...boy, you got THAT right. Knopfler carries his tone around in his hands...literally. I play 5-string banjo, and some people put a lot of stock in the sound of vintage banjos, more specifically like the 1928 Gibson Granada that Earl Scruggs played. However, one writer noted that any banjo Earl Scruggs played would sound like a '28 Granada!! Guess I better get to practicing, eh?

Thanks for listening,

I've got a friend in New Orleans who plays a custom (I think) Telecaster--humbucker in the bridge position. He has an absolutely unique sound, both chordally and timbrally.

One time we were playing together and he offered to let me play his axe. "Oh boy," I thought. "Now I can have that sound in my own hands." NOT. I still sounded like me and the guitar sounded like just a guitar. But in his hands it is a beautiful thing. Profoundly humbling experience.
