This was posted before, but needs to come up again. Back a while, I wrote a song called What If It Was Love. It was one of my first attempts with Real Band. The link to the file on Soundcloud was posted and it got a lot of plays and some positive feedback. Enter Rog, from here on the forums. Rog teaches and plays, and some of his students also sing with his band. Rog heard that song and asked if I would mind if his BGV girls added some harmony. I told him he was welcome to go for it. In the process, I loaded that song back into RB, exported all tracks to individual WAV files, zipped them into a more manageable size, and sent them to him via one of the "send big mail" sites. He took the file down, unzipped, loaded it into his software, had the girls add the BGV, and then sent it all back to me. He had also added some tasteful guitar fills. I unzipped it, imported the WAV files back into RB, did some mixing, and came up with the finished product. I should mention that I am in Ohio and Rog (and The Bluebelles) are in England. Yet another reason why I love technology. One of my friends heard the remix and asked where the girls came from. I just smiled and said "Oh, they're in England." And of course I had to tell the story again, but this is just another great example of how technology flattened the world. I sent him another song about 10-12 days ago, and they added BGVs again. Thsi time, via email, I asked "Could they do it again and try...." That was done in a day or two, the tracks were again exchanged, and the final product was mixed last night. Taking his adds and adding it to the existing made it "a song". The next project is that one of the girls really likes one of my other songs and wants to take a run at it as a solo. Once again my reply "Go for it. Have a hit with it! And I can FINALLY say I got a song on the radio." Those files went to him in England overnight. Very anxious to hear what Jessie has in mind for it. Man, I LOVE this stuff!!! What If It Was Love (redo)

Eddie's right - we've had so much fun doing this stuff.
To send a whole song's worth of wav files by ftp takes us about 30 min and it's easy to discuss the project via email. The distance and the fact the Eddie and I have never met makes no difference.
We all have our own strengths and it's great to be able to pool expertise in this way. If anyone else decides to have a go at a joint project and want's more details about file transfer, just give us a shout.

Absolutely fantastic Aren't collaborations funs? Edit - Do not use zip to send files back and forth. Zip files are lossy compression files, thus you will loss some data. Instead use either flac, http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html or ape, http://www.monkeysaudio.com/ files. Both are lossless, no loss in sound what-so-ever, music compression programs and both are free. This way you will get the best sounding wavs possible.

A question... you said that you exported all the tracks and sent them. Wouldn't it be just as effective to simply send the song (even as an mpg) and they could track to that? Just wondering...

Mario - It doesn't really matter what Eddie sends to me as these don't get used in the final mix. Anything I send back is in the form of uncompressed wav files.
floyd jane - When we're tracking up backing vocals (BVs) the girls like to set up their own mix. You wouldn't realize it by listening to it, but at one point in the song there are sixteen tracks of BVs going on! Having separate tracks lets us take out anything which is distracting and also lets us suggest things like alternative instrumental parts which Eddie can pick-and mix from.
BTW, everything is done in Biab, RB, or Powertracks.
ROG.

In this case, I want Rog to have individual WAV files so he can, if he chooses to, replace the guitar, the bass.... if I sent it "compiled" into a stereo track he could not pick out just the bass or just the guitar.
I would be interested in knowing the computer logic behind the statement that zip or rar reduces quality. I dispute that though because all it does is compress FILE SIZE, not content. And it does so with a mathematical algorythm where it find similar strings inside a file and replaces them with a variable. So if the hexidecimal information inside a file finds a sting of 74Fa5D3A2 10 times ane replaced that string with a +, that is 10% compression. Then when the other side inflates, it goes the other way. Zip and rar don't touch what is inside the file. If it did, it would then have some effect when you zipped a GIF or a bunch of JPG files and the output would not be the same as the input.
Compression doesn't mean the same thing here as converting a WAV to an MP3 because you put a WAV in, you get a WAV out.

The BGV's sound really fine and the chorus is quite good. Nice job on this one.

No, that's not true. You're confusing .zip with lossy audio-specific file codecs such as wma, mp3, and the like.
While .zip can employ a number of different compression algorithms, all of them are lossless, including WavPack, which is specific to audio files.
Oh, and nice song!
Edit: Changed "should be lossless" to "are lossless".

Since ZIP format is generally used to back up data files, it wouldn't do if it were lossy. ZIP has never been lossy, and I've been using the ZIP format to backup files since the early days of DOS. Actually, PKARC before that, which was the precursor to PKZIP when PKWARE was sued by SEA (makers of ARC). Info on Phil Katz, creator of PKZip

Eddie,
I really like what you did with this song. Rog did a great job, and the background vocals really add a lot. Thanks for sharing this redo!

The Bluebells are three 16 year old girls. They have an exceptional ear for harmony. Eager to hear what one of them is doing with one of my songs as a solo performer. I since sent another over for the other two to fight over, and will then write a third song for whoever doesn't have a solo tune.
If she has a hit on BBC I still get mechanicals, right?

Somewhere on this forum is a thread where they did BGV on "I'm The One" as well. It was great mixing them in. They did more than what I kept but it was so great to have more than less, and I blended them in where their parts were really most tasteful and effective.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
