The next version will perhaps have backwards compatibility for some things, but the need to use embedded codes to run other devices will find us with an audio stream using some sort of transport protocol.
It depends on what kind of music you play. If you play pop music, jazz, country, blues, yes MIDI is not necessary. You can play all that music with adequate RT in BIAB.
But if you are involved in classical music, where you have to write down every note for every instrument, MIDI is the only way to go.
So, we, BIAB users, whe have to learn to not be so categorical.
