This was a song about someone I care for a lot but I had to back away because she needs to be free to follow her dream. She is recording that dream right now and the early mixes are nothing short of phenomenal. If you can imagine Emmylou Harris, but better....

Maybe something will happen between us some day if I "make a wish".

This was done about 60% freehand and 40% RB. The persistent hat and kick were drum machine, but the pattern drums were RB. The guitars were live but played clean and the effects added onboard. I did some flanger, and in one spot a little tremolo with it just for a few measures where I needed some "rrrrggggg" kick in the solo's pants. The BGV are a mix of live vocal and vocoder, about half and half.

You did a good job on it Eddie.
Vocals could use a little more variety.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

As in someone else singing the BGV for texture or some variation on the line itself?

Eddie,

I really like this song. You did a good job on the lyrics, and I like the structure of the song. To me, the reverb on your lead vocals causes your voice to blend in just a little too much with the music. But I am listening on new headphones that I am not that used to yet, so it could be me. The background vox sound okay to me. On your lead vox, you might try putting a pre-delay of about 40ms, so it won't be so "wet" instantly.

I gotta tell you, you are really making great progress in your recording/production sound, though. And your songwriting skills are really showing up! As I recall, it was just a few months ago, you were struggling in a rather dry spell. Seems like the drought is over!

Thank you Steve. The production this is just a matter of deciding what I wanted to be when I grow up, and I pretty much abandoned outboard gear and started mixing on the computer using a control surface so I didn't have to give up my precious sliders yet mix digitally.

I will play with the reverb and experiment with your suggestion.

The dry spell was a combination of things and as those things went away one by one it got better. I'm not out of the woods completely yet but I can see the sun shining through the branches.

When I listen to my stuff, something i do is listen to the same file through phones, laptop speakers, desktop speakers, desktop with subwoofer, the 6 speaker surround in the living room, the nearfield monitors in the studio, and the car. I am always shocked to hear how the exact same file sounds so different, and I try to find a balance point where I can fix it on the weak ones without hurting the strong ones, so try it NOT through phones and see if it sounds different.

Eddie,

Glad you can see the sun shining! I do the same thing, listening in several environments. When I listened to your song earlier, I was trying to avoid getting yelled at ("Turn that music down!") I will give it another listen when I can do it safely.

This sounds good Eddie. I do agree about the vocal reverb. I also thought that the effects on the guitar were a little over kill; I don’t think you need them IMHO.

But both of these are nitpicking, as it is a very good song.

That guitar overkill was deliberate because it was supposed to invoke the older style Todd Rundren used back in the Something/Anything days. I just felt this song had an old Todd feel and went with that heavy flanging and some tremolo that came and went.

I agree that it went too far but it isn't like it's on a CD for sale, so I didn't mess with it.... I would do it with a little less emphasis in a real studio.
