I'm slowly figuring this DXi/VST thing out. I'm using VI.ONE virtual instruments with the NI Kontakt player that they are packaged with as a plug-in. I've created a synth with the 6 instruments I use most often. The problem is that when I save a midi file, the synth does not save with it. Nor does it then automatically reload when I open the midi file Do I have to manually open the DXi dialog every time I load the song, then manually load the preset file, then manually assign the synth to all tracks? There must be a better way. Can't PT save that synth with the song so it autoloads? Or can I load it with a sysex command? I want to run a set list of songs. I don't mind having to have a different synth preset file for each song but if I have to manually load the DXi settings for every song, it's not going to work. HELP!

Are you saving the songs as .mid files or .seq files...

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

First set up your prefered Synth patches then try selecting the DXi Panel > Options > Save Default Dxi Synths. This should set up your synth to open as you have set it up. You can change the patches for use in the current song but it will revert back to the default on opening PTW again. Sometimes the actual Dxi/VSti settings are saved with the Seq File others are not. I use this method to allocated specified Synths to specified Ports so that selecting synths becomes easy.

Thanks to both. That's got it. .seq saves the fact that I want to use the Kontakt plug-in on tracks rather than the stock GS but it doesn't load the synth. By saving a "default" synth from the DirectX/Options panel, it loads when PT opens and is ready to go. I have my default "live" synth set up with my 6 instrument "band members" and will try to embed midi commands to mute the ones i don't need and set song-specific parameters. It should work.

I feel like I've moved out of the dark ages. I was using a very old version of BIAB and PT (Windows 2000) with a Roland 707 drum machine, an old 8-note poly Kawai synth and an ensoniq electronic piano that is probably now a museum piece. Now I'm virtual, portable and have a lot more room in my basement!
