I may be totally off base here but . . . why not just silence/mute the realtrack where you want it to "not play" using the F5 function? I use this function to arrange tunes I play on gigs twice a week with no issues. This way you can tell the realtrack where to play, when to play, change it's volume or not play at all.

If not try disabling the real track by 1st opening the real track selection window, then clicking (around the middle of the top 1/3 of the screen) Disable real tracks for this track (force midi).
