Since you can open up the Piano Roll window and edit the midi part like a midi bass, can't you do a copy/paste there? I've never tried that but the notation and piano roll are editable so that might work.
I just tried it and you were right. It works. You have to set the track you are interested in first. Then you select all the note events ( or all events if you wish) from the popup menu. Finally you cut the notes from the melody/soloist.
Then you move to the, say, piano BiaB track and paste the notes. Then freeze the track and presto, you've got midi on a BiaB track. This is a great new option for me when doing covers.
