Dear Forum Friends,
I welcome you to listen to a new song my wife and I wrote a few weeks ago called "The Sounds of Love." No big back story on this one, I just wanted to introduce some 6th and 9th chords. We hope you like it.

SpaceDog,

Very nice song, very touching lyrics.
You did a nice job on the vocals.
Acoustic Guitar picking and strings add really nicely to the mix.

The ooohhh addition in background about 2:45 is complimentary.

You have a nice clear voice, harmony adds nice touches, but don't use too much.

Thanks for you and your wife for the hard work and sharing with us all!

FrankB, Robert,
Thanks. I'm glad you both liked the song. I especially appreciate your comment on the vocals since I had a lot of trouble with them. Apparently, it's difficult to sing the 7th on key. It took a bunch of takes to get it right. I appreciate your comments.

I really enjoyed this. The chorus is really nice. They only thing I would change is that in the 1st phrase of the chorus, it sounds like you are taking too many breaths. But the 2nd and 3rd phrases in the chorus don't have that.

"Listen closely and you'll realize [breath] there's so much not seen by your eyes [breath],
but your heart can recognize [short breath] the sounds of love."

I think it would flow a lot better if you could sing it:

"Listen closely and you'll realize there's so much not seen by your eyes [breath],
but your heart can recognize the sounds of love."

The chorus is really catchy; I just think it needs to flow a little more to really grab me.

This is a great song. Thanks for posting it!

Great song. I especially liked the chorus with its different meter. And nice use of the 6ths and 9ths...so many chord variations, let's use them all!

Hi SD,

Wow!!! This is a very well written song. It sounds like it would be right at home in a stage musical. Very very nice. I loved the feminine rhymes in the bridge (guide you / beside you / inside you). I also loved the melody on the major 7ths.

When I read what John Ford had written, it got me thinking and, for what it's worth, I'll pass those thoughts on. I think the section that John refers to could be made more easily singable if a few words were removed. Something like the below.

    Listen closely, you'll realize
there's so much not seen by eyes
but hearts can recognize the sounds of love

In the above, it would possible to heighten lyric tension by having a slight pause after "hearts" if "eyes" flowed straight on to "but" without a pause. Using a pause in this way is one of the devices of rhetoric and it can be very effective when it works in lyrics.

Please keep in mind that these thoughts are just my opinions. Feel free to throw in the trash can

All the best,
Noel

John, Tano, Noel,
Thank you listening and taking time to provide your helpful comments. I'm glad you liked it. I may try John's suggestion on the chorus. I actually did try it that way but it sounded a bit choppy. When I perform it, I'll try it both ways and see how it feels.
Noel, there's a lot I need to learn about songwriting. I'm still using a lot of trial and error. The melody of chorus was written with a specific rhythm in mind so I do think I'll change it, but the concept you're describing is very interesting. Thanks for the good tip. I've also never heard the term "Feminine Rhyme" I'll have to look that up to make sure I understand it and use it effectively.
Tano, Thank you as well. I love your enthusiasm.

I really consider myself lucky to have such talented friends thorugh this forum to learn from. Thanks to everyone for listening.

Nice melody, lyrics, arrangement, and harmonies. I also thought that the different meter on the chorus was a very effective contrast but still flowed well into the rest of the song. Good work!

Thanks,
Bruce

This is a very good song and if I had heard this in a record/CD shop I would have asked from what musical is that from! Great song, super lyrics and backing tracks.

I will agree with John about the chorus being a bit choppy. Instead of reworking the vocals I would add a short run or rift between the vocal parts to make it flow better. Maybe a bass run would work. Or a short lead rift. Just my thoughts.
