Track Erase removes all the data in the track. Track Remove, as stated above removes the track completely and moves all subsequent tracks up one position. I do not use this in the middle of a number of active tracks because sometimes I have found that the effects in the moving tracks do not always move correctly.
Track > Erase Data Only - retains the track description but deletes the Midi or Digital data. Use this option for the problem you describe.
