I have recently within the week been having a problem with my internet access. I can readily access PGMusic, Ebay, etc. initial website, but when I try to access a link within that site all my computer does is keep trying to access the site but is never successful. For instance when I try to access the Sweetwater site on nearfield monitors, or when in ebay and I click on an item to bid access is never achieved. Also some websites take 5 to 10 minutes to initially access. I have run Avast, Superantispyware, and Defender and all show no evil spyware or lurking viruses. Rebooting does not help either. Has anyone got any suggestions.Thanks. D.

Try free ccleaner from piriform.com. (It will wipe out your history and cookies but seems to solve some problems like this.)

malwarebytes antimalware, using a safe mode scan
If that doesn't work maybe update your browser

I am back and still no success. Thanks for taking the time for suggestions, I tried them all. Currently I run Superantispyware, Avast, and Windows Defender. I ran a full scan with Malware and it found 1 part of a PC utility spyware program I couldnt complete the download on. I tried resetting the default and even uninstalled explorer 9 because the machine worked fine on explorer 8. I should mention that I am talking about my general use HP laptop. I dont use my DAW for any email, surfing, etc, I am only using it (DAW)now because my laptop is useless for forum use. It boots up fine, loads email fine, I can access all my documents easily. Every time I access the internet it is slower than molasses and I cant connect to any links. I am still open to suggestions. This is very time consuming and frustrating. Thanks for any further suggestions.D

Go to TOOLS --> INTERNET OPTIONS --> CONNECTIONS --> LAN SETTINGS and make sure your proxy server is not checked. There have been viruses in the past that turned the proxy on, and you don't use a proxy server.

The way you desribe the problem, it seems unusual. You say it loads the 'primary page' but not the secondary ones - ie. links from these pages.
I have never heard of this, though it is possible that your original page is stored in a chache on your machine and the others are accessed over the internet.
Perhaps check your internet speed. Here my IP promises me 30 mbps but I often get 1 mgps.

If your internet ISP is slow this could effect things. Phone them. obviously WIFI can be effected by walls etc.

The primary page could be (and likely is) loading from cache. To test that, get to some "top" page, like a newspaper or CNN or something with a clock, and refresh. Or go to somewhere you have never been, like www.purple.com. If you acn get to a page you have never visited, your internet is working. If you can't, you likely have an in house connectivity issue.

Click START, then type CMD and hit enter. In that black box that just opened, type

ping www.google.com <enter>

and you should see 4 packets sent and 4 received. If you get host unreachable, request timed out or anything other than 4 packets sent and 4 received, you are not getting out of your house.

Then try to ping 192.168.1.1 if you have a Linksys router or 192.168.0.1 if you have a Netgear or a D-Link. If you can't ping your own router, bypass the wireless by plugging a cable in and doing the ping command again. You need to determine if you are talking to your router as step #1.

S-L-O-W and can't connect are very different conditions. Once you determine if you are even getting out of your house, there is more.

Eddie's suggestion was my first instinct.
I'd just start with ping routine myself though.
With a couple quick tests it'll surely let you know if you are getting out, and how far.

FWIW ping has its weakpoints with cache also. I hit one today. Thought I'd ping a website to see if we were still hosting it (since response displays the IP). My system pinged our server (because it was in cache I guess)and of course our server responded since the bindings were still there. So I thought we had it. A while later a reverse lookup and whois showed me the error of my ways.
Wrong test for intended purpose on my part I guess.
But I learned today 'ping' in command line still has cache. Somehow I thought this may be relevant.

Hey rharv, ping doesn't cache... What you actually came across was a cached DNS lookup.

I'll second that possibility that you've got a proxy hijacking your machine. A couple years back I picked up something that set me to some proxy server, and it was a real pain to get rid of.

Lawrie is right about ping not caching. DNS caching is another story entirely.

I wish I remember the name of the virus, but ALL IT DID was enable the proxy server, set the home page and make the proxy route you to where the hijack wanted you to go. I must have had 5 customers call me about it. And though the fix took 2 minutes, I get a 1 hour minimum charge of $75, so.... In one case the guy thanked me and sent me on my way, but in most cases I stayed there and did temp file cleanup, malware scan...

I've run into something that behaves similiar to what is being described. It's a data stealing trojan and bootkit virus called Alureon. Don't know where I've been picking it up, but have had it 3 times over the last 6 months. MS Essentials doesn't seem to pick it up on its quick scan, it only sees it on a full scan. Malwarebytes only sees part of it. The only way that I can remove it is to use a Kaspersky download called TDDS Killer. If you can get to that, give it a try at http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 Download it from another computer and load into the infected computer. Good luck.

Fellow posters, thank you for your time and attention to my plight. I think I may have solved the problem. Firstly I would like to re-mention that my other computers were accessing and browsing just fine, so at least the problem was isolated to my laptop. My laptop is my work computer so I was very handicapped by the problem. Anyway I tried each and every suggestion given by your responses to no avail. Then on another website some one suggested going into TOOLS > MANAGE ADD ONS and disabling them all. I tried that to no avail. Then for some reason I went into YOUTUBE and tried to play a video, which it would not do because I had disabled it (Adobe). The system told me the video needed Shockwave Flash (which I had Just disabled) would I like to load/run it. I clicked yes and Voila! after installing the software and replaying the YOUTUBE link, the link opened immediately. I have been playing with (browsing) ebay, youtube, and some of my work sites with great success. So it appears my problem was a glitch in the "Adobe Flash player". I want to thank you for your suggestions because even at my old age I learned things about pinging, and other approaches to solving challenges. Once again thanks for your time and attention. DennisD
