I have done 2 audio books and a music album and have them duplicated by a duplicating firma. They are sold in an local store, the sale is not big, but it gives me the money invested back, and some money to use for some extra gear that I need. My experience so far is this: At first they sell well, but then the sale flatens out (which of course is normal) People still buy them from time to time. So far I have sold a little above one houndred of each.
The question is: Maybe it is more practhical that I duplicate them myself, but I do not want to use my "ordinary" CD burner for the jobb, I want if possible to have an external CD burner that I use only for duplicating purposes, and maybe expand to more CD burners if possible so I can Duplicate more CDs at the same time.So the questions are:
1) what is your upinion about this. 2) Do anyone of you have experience with duplicating your own CDs for sale. 39What is the best burning speed to prevent incorect burning. 4) Is it possible at all to get axceptable "professional" products this way.
Best regards Tono.

My wife and I each used to do CDRs and we found them to be somewhat unreliable, with returns. Sometimes they just wouldn't play, especially in older CD players. This was despite burning them at the slowest speed the CD burner would accept.
We tried LightScribe for labels, which takes far too long; stick-on labels, which are messy to print and can come off, ruining someone's player; and printing inkjet labels directly onto the CD, with far too many off-center and messy prints.
For our more recent commercial releases, we use Oasis. I've noticed Oasis is beginning to offer more packages for short runs, although the price to set up the master is the same whether you make 50 or 5000, so it seems to be unprofitable unless you make at least a thousand.
The difference is in burning a CD (via your home CD burner and CDRs) versus having a professional glass master pressed.
So, I really don't have a good, economical solution for you, except - perhaps - the newer trend of digital download cards, where you sell a customer a code to download your tracks and artwork, with no physical inventory. I'm starting to sell more digital download cards at my concerts now than CDs.

Thank you for good answer Matt. If this is your experience then I think it is best to let some others do the duplicating work. I do not like when I sell something and it dont work properly. What about this stand alone duplicators. Anyone out there who has experience with them??

I know from a studio that I had to visit for work often that they used those kind of duplicators. Like 10 burners in a tower, They work fast and rteliable, but the problem is that you still have no label. I remember he used a special CD printer, but I don't know if that is high quality and never saw the result from that either. The disadvantage is still that you need to do those prints yourself which is a one by one printjob, not really convienient. I have the feeling you are European? In that case (I don't recall the name of the company) I know there is a factory in Chechia which makes copies, I think even including all the artwork, for very acceptable prices. You might want to google for it. If I see one of those CD's I used to master for this recordcompany, I will see if there is some info about it, although I don't think they ever mentioned that on the labels or CD's. But well I would also still advice to let a proffesional company do it for you, the price per 1000 or more should be still pretty acceptable and the quality for sure is much better than the CDR's you would buy yourself.
I'll be back...
