What is the best way to permanently equalize the volume of a midi track imported to a BIAB arrangement? If I go to Melody, Adjust Volume it only lasts until the next time, then the midi track volume (on the melody track) is right back where it was. I could convert the track to audio and adjust it in Audacity, but surely there is an easier way!
Thanks,
pete

Not sure Pete. it would seem that if it is on the melody track, and the song is saved with the melody track volume settings where you want them. then it should reopen with the new levels.

You've got to open the sequencer and adjust there and save

It's right back to where it was, because volumes for each channel may be assigned within the midi file. With BiaB you may assign volumes for individual channels via the PianoRoll window. Just select some channel and adjust the appropriate controller.

Sounds like an MIDI events issue. You might try to open the notation window and click on # (event list) and change velocity levels there. I haven't had the need for it myself since I made my midi files in another program and the volume is ok after importing. I checked the eventlist though and even if it doesnot to seem to support the midi controller 7 for volume, you could still try to change velocity. If the event on the midi track are really a volume issue, which are added into the midi file, this trick probably won't work, unless anyone else knows if and how BiaB can use controller 7. As far as I could see, the eventlist only works for the melody and solo tracks.
You could also try to work in RB, but that also isn't easy I think, but you can record fader movements on the tracks, so you automatize (is this correct English?) the volume.
Third way would be to adjust the volume and or velocity controller data allready in the sequencer you made the songs with (if you still got that).
I'll be back...

Try saving with patches and harmony and include the melody track. That may override any imbedded track info. Otherwise, this is typical of a midi file that is downloaded from the web. Whatever equipment was used to create the file in the first place put all the cc info in there, Biab is merely reading it. I find Real Band much easier to work with for something like this. In RB, open up the event list, look for CC7's and strip them out, then import the track back into Biab or just do the whole song in RB in the first place. Remember, RB is Biab plus a 48 track sequencer. Pretty cool. People will talk about using Sonar or Pro Tools or whatever other sequencer usually because of simple familiarity, RB will do 'almost' everything they will plus most of the Biab functions plus Real Tracks/Drums that they don't have.

Thanks for the suggestions, I must spend some time with RealBand. It sounds like the best way to do this without using another product. The "automatize" should have been "automate".

The "save with patches and harmony" didn't work for me. I know I must spend some time with RB where I can work with imported midi tracks. Thanks for your comments.

Mmmm ... much easier said than done I think. I did find the Controller for a selected channel, but never did find how to adjust the volume. I'll keep looking (through the help file)!

Select controller #7 (volume). Adjustments are easily achieved graphically via dragging up or down those vertical lines showing up in the lower part of the PianoRoll window. Those controllers may also get created at any point in the midi file just via clicking with the mouse somewhere in the PianoRoll controller editing area.

I endorse Bob's comments, but if you do need to adjust volumns in BIAB use the Sequencer Button, choose Sequencer on Melody track then in the Sequencer Window click on the right hand box for each Channel for a drop down meneu and adjust the velocity by a number say 10. Careful, as overuse has a Compression effect with all the velocities at 127 maximum.

Ah thanks, I must have overlooked that. Now I see the controller yes and it works thanks. So now there is also another question rising from that: What does the button add/scale do?

You don't like manuals, do you. Those buttons steer mouse editing modes for editing graphic events.

Hello Pete,
Here are the steps for another way to do it, that doesn't involve the piano roll window.
1. Open the Sequencer window (melody track) so you can get a clear picture of what channels are in the MIDI file and what instruments they correspond to.
2. Close the sequencer window and open the Even List window.
3. Find controller # 7 for each channel and adjust it how you want (0-127), by double-clicking on it and changing the 'value'. Also, to be sure, check if controller #11 (expression) is used in the file.
Note that some other ways of changing the 'volume' actually change the velocities of the individual notes, which is not always desirable. For example the 'Adjust Velocities' item in the Sequencer window, and the Melody | Edit Melody track | Adjust Level menu item.

Press 'Insert' and in the 'Event Type to Edit' dialog select 'Control Change'. Then you'll be presented with a bunch of Controllers -> Volume is #7; Expression (#11) is likely more appropriate for introducing some dynamics to the playing.
