Hi all,

Maybe this project is a little too ambitious. Here's my version of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb:

Comfortably Numb
lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=7465083&q=lo
hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=7465083&q=hi

I am not completely satisfied yet. Maybe you can have some directions in which way I should go now.

Cheers

Superbron

Hey, Super;

Just gave that a listen. That is an undertaking I would not want to try. Pink Floyd is difficult to pull off a cover to. Actually, it was a good listen. I will check it out again for sure. Are you doing the guitar? That was pretty good. IMHO, there was some instrument in the beginning and middle that did not sound Floyd like. Don't know what it was. Also, the guitar was good, but the strings near the end seemed too loud. I would have preferred a heavy bass, drums, rythmn guitar, with your lead louder, and jamm on out at the end, and nail it. Don't get me wrong, I did really like it. I will definitely listen to it again. Good effort. I will see what else you have on SC for your other 93 songs.

Later,

Gene

Gene pretty much nailed it.
There were some "midi"? patches that didn't fit the quality of the rest of the song. (IMO)
Needs more punch!
Is that you singing?

Pretty damn good start tho'

Hey Gene and Mick,

Thanks for listening to my song and your advise. I've adjusted some things and I think it sounds better now. Yeah it's me singing: quite hard to do Waters and Gilmour as well :-) What instruments do you mean are midi patches at he beginning and the middle. Did you mean the horns?

Cheers

I'm not sure, as I just listened to it once thru. I am off now, and off tomorrow. I will listen again tonite. Maybe if you listed the instruments, I could pick it out of a multiple choice.

I just listened again. I like it much better now. Good guitar vs strings at the end jam out. I think I am hearing horns. But then, it is a cover. One can do it any way you want. I am a Neil Young fan since back in Everybody know this is nowhere daze. I have heard some Tribute bands with a definite rock edge do some really good covers of his stuff. If I wanted to be constructively critical, and it is just MHO, at the beginning, where I think you have digital delayed guitar, kind of "boinging" in and out, I like the idea, and the sound, but maybe try that instrument buried back in the mix with, I don't know, more delay and reverb to WET it up and create more of a spatial, trippy background ambience, instead of so up front in the mix. It just kind of jumps out there and distracts from the vocals. I'm almost thinking that is all I heard this time around. The thing is, even with songs on the radio, sometimes we as musicians say, "Wow, he should have done that like this". You know what I mean? I really did like your re-mix, though. My songs should be so complex!

Good Jamming;
Gene

It definitely has more PUNCH this time. I love the guitar solos. I swear you buried the vocals this time. Listen at about 4:00.
The drums sound better. It is a really good work considering who you are covering. It would be like me trying to do Led Zeppelin. Difficult. On another line, there is a ZZ Top song, don't remember the name right now, but it's got a line in it that says, ". . . and all points in between. . ." The song starts out faster, then abruptly changes tempo to a slower part. I have never heard that much if at all before. I tried a window in BB (bar settings I think) where you can change tempo among other things at a certain bar. It worked good. I may try that sometime, since the technique is not over used yet.

Have fun,
Gene

Super,

Really liked the guitar. Vocals could be brought out some.

Was this a midi file - and you added vocals and guitar ?

Superbron,

Thanks for sharing your work. I like most of what I hear, vocal, little flourishes, bass, drums, guitar, solo guitar, horns in the chorus... One thing I miss that I try to emphasize when I play it with my band is the arpeggiated chording in the chorus sections. The feel changes in these sections, which shift from the minor chording in the verses into a different voice and feel where the lyrics recall images that are more positive, and the major chording and arpeggiated playing of them helps signify that shift from verse to chorus sections. This to me a part of the atmospherics of the music of Floyd, and what makes this song especially poignant. The chorus chording could be played by guitar, keys or strings, and whichever one gets the nod ought to try to produce a 1-2-3-4 beat per measure arpeggio of the major chord being played. These chorus chords add a suspended fourth to them right before they change to the next, which adds tension and interest. Again, thanks for giving this a go, and keep up the fine work.

Vocals buried, I like what I hear of them, some of the disonant harmony is cool.

The falling arpeggios are missing on keys in sections like at 3:50
It takes guts to try to do redo Gilmours playing. It is iconic for the era. Kudos on taking it on. Nice job.
Would be fun to mix!

Thanks for letting us listen.

I think you did a great job using Biab for this song. Pink Floyd is one hard band to emulate via midi and you did a fantastic job, IMO.

Way to go !!

Must be something wrong with my system as I can't open either link. I can get to your music page with all 107 songs on it but this one does not seem to be there.

I'll try again later,

I had that problem yesterday. Refreshsed a couple times and it popped up.

FWIW, I think it's my fault.

There ya go . . . new just how to correct the problem, therefore you must have caused the problem, hence it had to be your fault.

Ambitious project may be the understatement of the thread. So kudos to you for taking on such a imposing project. With that said I was lost a bit in the beginning as the vocal it seemed a bit o sorts, not matching the feel of the backing, well to me at least . . . but as the tune played out it not only grew on me but seemed to come together, especially the vocal that “to me” started out a bit weak. The only direction I can give is for you to keep working on it as it is indeed becoming quite good.
