During the beta testing, I prepared and A-Z manual for installing SampleTank on your computer. I recommend that if you are having problems, you uninstall what you have and try again. If you already have an account with IK-Multimedia, then obviously you don't need to create a new account as per the document; just log in with your credentials. If the name of the installation file has changed, please adjust accordingly. Installing SammpleTank for Band-in-a-Box (From A-Z)(from Peter Gannon: Thanks John! We'll make this a sticky post!)

26 pages of instruction to install Sampletank? Really? Seems kind of scary.

Here's an Executive Summary:
The install is the same routine as for Amplitube (which came with 2012) It is straightforward, the trick is that the serial number is in your free account on the IK Multimedia webiste. Running the Authorization Manager (which the PG Music installer runs) will create your serial # on the IK Multimedia site, but you need to go their site, and logon to retrieve it.
A summary:
- run the PG Installer. It runs the SampleTank Installer
- SampleTank (IK Multimedia) Authorization Manger will set you up with a free account (If you already have a IK Multimedia free account, you just enter your username/password and bypass the create account stage). You will then need to retrieve your serial number. You get that from the IK Multimedia web site, logging into to your free account on IK Multimedia site, go to "My Products" section, and find SampleTank, and press AUTHORIZATIONS button. You paste that serial # into the Authorization Manager screen, and you're done. John's PDF manual has nice screenshots of these steps.

I already have the full version of Sampletank but I have never used it with BIAB. I don't have BIAB 2013 yet but plan on upgrading soon (from 2012).
Can I use my full version instead of the BIAB version? Is there a separate dxi and vst for Sampletank?

1. Yes. 2. Yes. The installer asked if I wanted the DXi and/or VST versions, along with an RTAS version in case I have ProTools.

Matt, One last question. I use tts1 as a dxi and just use it as a GM synth. Can the sample tank dxi be used as a GM synth using standard Gm patches or do I need to assign specific sounds for each Biab instrument?

No matter what the Manual says - nothing happens when I install it! I've already had the Serial Numbers and reged onto their website when I was DLing the thing from PG as part of the massive Download. I think I'm going to pas on trying this again and again for the rest of tonight cos all that is happening is that I'm getting frustrated with the darned software. WHY should it be THAT complicated?! cheers ian

John, I'm no expert here; I just followed John Ford's tutorial during the beta testing, and that worked for me. Someone else who knows Sampletank better will come along to help you. I do remember seeing a recent post by Tom Smith (filkertom) indicating that Sampletank markets some kind of GM set, but in my very limited experience, I don't see that someone would have to have that. EDIT: here it is: http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/showflat.p...true#Post387711Ian, see the above disclaimer. I had a little frustration getting this to work during beta testing until I saw John Ford's illustrated tutorial. But perhaps if you told us the exact steps you are following, we could assist.

Hi Ian, Installing the SampleTank plugin *should* just be a matter of double-clicking on the file sampletank_2.5_setup.exe and clicking OK-Next-Next etc... Of course, you'll need to authorize it eventually, which is a few extra steps, but just installing the plugin for the first time, that should be it. [As someone pointed out there were some quirks during our beta test, but those were ironed out] So apparently something is not happening as expected on your system, and we'd like to find out what it is - could you check a couple of things.... within Band-in-a-Box, open the VST/DXi Plugins window and let us know if you see it listed there, as in the screen shot below:

Hi Andrew Yes that is exactly what I get. But what does it DO? I can't get it to do anything! The red thing is very pretty but inert and only the Box above seems to work. Is that all just pretty graphics ?
Remember - I'm up from a VERY old Biab to this 2013 and up until now I've simply made my recordings in a DAW importing rudimentary Biab files as backing tracks. I have no idea (obviously) of how these things are supposed to work in the digital domain. I dont know what button to press, what happens if I do and what I can expect out of it. What next, Andrew please? Ian

Just to confirm - with the VST/DX box as above and "Forte" selected my Biab midi tracks play OK. If I click down to the Sampletank one, (its second on the drop down list)all I get is SILENCE!! That is what I am struggling with. Ian

Oh ok - so it IS installed, I misunderstood.
Yes that is normal. There are a couple of ways you can use SampleTank. By far the EASIEST way is to just right-click on a Band-in-a-Box MIDI track (i.e. like you would normally do to select a RealTrack) and select a Hi-Q instrument. The Hi-Q instruments play through SampleTank.
In fact you don't really need to visit the SampleTank interface at all - Band-in-a-Box configures it automatically. The only thing that you DO need to do is make sure that "Use VST/DXi synth" is checked in the MIDI Driver Setup dialog. (Opt. | MIDI/Audio Driver Setup).
Advanced users and people with some extra time to play around with it, can do much more with SampleTank, such as downloading and loading in any other SampleTank compatible sound onto any MIDI track. However we shouldn't confuse this thread with that more advanced topic.

Hi John,
Sampletank needs specific instruments to be assigned to specified channels and should be used to develop the song after all the auditioning of styles etc has ben completed. For auditioning, use a synth such as Coyote, Forte, etc which provide the standard Bank Zero sound set of 128 patches covering the majority of instruments.

Hi Andrew Yes - you were right. Sorry to have wasted your time. But I didn't know and if you don't know, you don't know. Now I put in a style which I knew to be ALL midi and on right click I get the Hi-Q tag. When I go on there I get a small choice of sounds which by substitution into the Biab file sound great. I like the Forte sounds but the Hi-Q nylon guitar is just Top Class in comparison!!
Hi Lyn I guess I just create my file with the chords, As and Bs etc till I'm happy with how its going and then start to use Real Tracks, Hi-Q etc to thicken it and make it more realistic. Also - I expect I can BUY more sounds off the SampleTank site and they just drop into the SampleTank folder and pop into Biab as needed? Yes? No? PPS - Lyn, could you move nearer the West Midlands please?? (lol)

You can try right clicking the link and do a save target as to save the file to HD and open it there.
Otherwise try another browser like Firefox.
Good luck
