This is my first post, but some of you may have heard me sing already on ROG's track - Small Family Of Strangers.

I'm one of ROG's students and he's suggested that I post some of my own songs on here, because there's a lot of experience and it's good to get other people's opinions.

This one might be a bit heavier than a lot of the tracks I've heard on the forum, but ROG's got me trying to write and sing in as many different styles as possible. It's all recorded and mixed in PowerTracks, so everything is played in live. The instrumentation is just guitar and bass, with drums programmed in midi, but we ended up with 20 tracks of my vocals including all the tracked-up BVs.

All comments welcome and thanks for listening.

After that fine work on Small Family of Strangers, we already know you can sing so post away! I already heard this on Soundcloud.

What you will find here is a lot of people who can separate the dancer from the dance, so even if a song isn't of a favorite genre, most of the people hear know talent when they hear it.

Josh,

sounds like you have a good teacher! What a dynamic and sonically interesting song! You brought a variety of instruments in and out to achieve several different moods in the song, some quiet, some not so much! But ALL of the techniques you used to vary the sound were effective and well-done!

My only real criticism probably says more about my ears than about the quality of your song: I couldn't understand a single word of your lyrics except BANSHEE (and if that hadn't been the title I probably would have missed that too)

Very strong vocals and guitar playing! And for MIDI drums, you did an awesome job! What library or synth did you use?

So, what does ROG teach? How to play? or how to record? Or both?

My vote: "You're going to the next level!"

Good song. You got a strong voice.
I like the harmonies.
What I miss a little is a soloing instrument.

Well I liked it, but I suppose I was always going to say that!

Pat - If I might answer your questions, the drums are WAV samples which we made ourselves and which are played out using the Bigbadabom VST drums plugin. We made up quite a lot of samples so that the composer can choose exactly which drums go to make up the kit.

We provide tuition on a one-to-one basis and students can choose from instrumental skills, singing, composing and recording. Josh is doing the lot and I agree with you that he's heading for the next level.

Josh - You might be right about the song being a bit on the heavy side for the forum, but there's still time for others to wade in.

So, my next question to ROG is:
Is Josh your star student, or is the whole class this good?

Pat I can vouch for at least 4 of his other students being very good, but in my ears, Josh is #1 so far. There is a 1a, and a 1b, and a 1c.... they are all good. I believe Josh belongs on English Idol. Or British Idol, or whatever they have in England. If you really break down the vocals in Small Family of Strangers and understand that he is singing EVERY voice.... 5 part harmony in some places. And accurate as all get-out. I guess you guys in the south would say "Boy Howdee", or "Honey Hush".

Inside joke time for Rog:

Looking forward to hearing a lot more of Josh and another of his singing students, Chad. Andy as well. A LOT more.

I can dig it.

I especially like the guitar riff at the beginning and end.

Would be fun to hear it return at least one other place in the song, maybe at the break.

Addition of a screaming banshee guitar solo would be cool.

Nice arrangement! I particularly liked the harmonies and the strummed guitar is very effective in setting the mood for the piece.

You've got the bombastic sound, but it needs a bit more edge to it. Listening to James Young on Heavy Metal Poisoning for comparison, it's interesting how little difference there is between this an overdone lounge-lizard approach to the lyric.

Thanks for posting this! I don't think it's too far out for this forum.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

This is one of the best rock songs that I have heard in quite a while!

Great job, super vox and mix.

Two thumbs up

Thank's for all the feedback everyone!

Perhaps next time I shall incorporate a huge solo for those of you that feel it is missing.

Josh - Very cool! Great sound all around. Interesting opening and closing. I, too, was expecting a "screaming lead" to occur at any time.... But, great, nonetheless.
