I began with midi style to midi style changes and those work fine. Then I tried to mix midi styles with a real drums/real track style and ran into the problem. Good to know I can also use real d/real t to real d/real t changes.
And thanks for the reminder about 3/4 to 4/4 changes -- learned how to work around that too.
