All of my reading tells me that almost any mic can produce good sound if you know how to use it. Something I am still learning a lot about.

Sorry but that's misleading, I would want a newbie to belive that. Any mike can produce a sound might be more accurate. You can like that sound if you wish, but it's not just hype that good mikes are sold on, there really is a difference and the haman ear responds albeit mostly subconsciously.

Hey Dome,

If you are considering the Shure SM58 I have two things to tell you from my experience,

1) the SM58 is a great mic

2) the Behringer XM8500 is just as good and costs a lot less!

I bought the SM58 and used it for awhile. Needed another and didn't wanna drop another $100 so I got the Behringer for about $25 at Amazon. I've used them both for a year and the only difference is the Behringer is just a little hotter than the SM58. So if your budget is limited you cannot go wrong spending $25 on a $100 mic!

Hi Dome.

Just regarding the working of Focusrite with PCs, ours are USB not Firewire.

Thanks for that info ROG. I will be looking further into that Salesmans' claims about Focusrite FireWire AI's not working with PC's, and then maybe buying elsewhere. I have read many user reviews of the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24, Pro 40 and LC 56 where many of those same users have had NO problems at all. It all seems to depend on the particular chipset used. I chose a Motherboard with a Texas Instrument chipset SPECIFICALLY because there are supposed to be very few problems using the TI chipset with FireWire, as opposed to using those VIA chipsets. Even Focusrite themselves recommend using a TI chipset.

Thanks again ROG.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this forum.

Rockstar_not and TerryB ... thanks for your input. The Audio Interface I was going to buy was the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. It was a toss up between this and the Saffire Pro 24, its little Brother. It is a FireWire 400 interface with MIDI. I need MIDI..

I have been researching Audio Interfaces for a long time, and more recently, was even considering a PCIe card from RME,and then getting an outboard preamp to go with it, but this would cost me over $1K, which is WAY beyond what I can spend right now. In a years' time, maybe, but not just now.

I try to read as many "Users Forums" as much as I can, and when I find the product I'm interested in, I then usually go to Amazon and read the user reviews of said product. I also read the professional review sites as well as all of the other "Home Recording"-type forums, but I am ALWAYS wary of manufacturers marketing hype.

So, it looks like I'm back to doing more research and talking to "knowledgeable" pros in the music stores.

TerryB, I have No buyer remorse WHATSOEVER! I haven't installed it yet, 'cause I need to get another internal Hard Drive, but I watched the Video tutorials last night, and from what I saw, I can honestly say that BIAB seems absolutely AMAZING!, and is WAY beyond what I imagined it to be. It has to be THE best purchase I have ever made in my entire life! I can't stop smiling!

Sorry Zero and John,

I must have overlooked you replies for some reason. I must have been half asleep. Just wanted to thank you both for your input.

- John, thanks for the tip re the Behringer mic.

-Zero, I noticed in your signature that you run Win 7 x64 and the Focusrite Saffire 56 LC.
I gather if you are using the LC 56 on a Win 7 machine, then you are not having any problems with the FireWire. Are you happy with the 56 LC's performance? What is your latency (RTL)? I would like to get a comfortable RTL factor of around 5ms on average (if possible) with whatever Interface I eventually buy.
The LC 56 is out of my price3 range, but is a very nice interface with a good following, and I hear the Liquid Channels are fantastic!

Tschuss
