Hi... XP Pro, Dual-Core, 2gB RAM, etc.
I have BB 2009 on the external USB drive. Of late when I boot up myy computer, I get some kind of error message about "delayed write operation failed" and the computer goes through the process of "rediscovering" the drive. Does this indicate a problem with the BIAB drive? That message is often a precursor to drive failure for internal drives, as I recall. Anyone else getting this? Any advice? Any workarounds?
Thanx... Jim W.

Have you been using the drive without this message or has it always been there? Check the policies of your drive. Go into the drive properties and find the Policies tab. USB drives are usually marked 'Optimize for quick removal'. If it 'Optimized for performance', you may see that error unless you 'Safely remove hardware' first. It can be a number of other things including hardware problems but I'd start with the Policies. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330174Rachael p.s. Of course, check for the latest drivers for your computer

xp is kinda forgiving on plugging and unplugging stuff.
When I use linux and didn't remove the drive properly I end up having to put it back and go through the removal process in xp or vista and then it works.
I don't leave the drive plugged in unless I'm going to use it then unmount it.

It appears at random when starting the computer or after I have let it be for a long time.

It's on optimize for performance and I cannot change it. "Enable write caching on the disk" is UNchecked

Odd that I cannot change that setting

Interesting you can't change setting. I don't know XP Pro but maybe someone else can help there.
I'd try a few easy things:
1. Try a different USB cable.
2. Use the Safely Remove Hardware (usually found in your taskbar) on the drive before shutting down. This will take the place of Quick Removal. See if the error is there next boot. If not, this is probably the culprit.

Hello Jim,
Try plugging the USB cable into a port on the back of your computer (rather than on the front of your computer or elsewhere). If it is already connected in the back, try plugging the 'additional power' USB connector into another USB port at the same time. Rather than using two ports that are side by side, ideally use two different pairs of ports. If you continue to have problems, please contact us.

I had random problems untii I found a really thick USB cable. Even the dual headed one that came with the unit didn't play nice at times. Ever since I substituted a 'robust' usb cable it worked fine, everytime.

Thanx to Rachael, Andrew, and John for their replies.
I should have said that I never remove the drive--it's connected via a powered hub and stays connected.
I am going to try to move the drive off the powered hub it's on. )Nothing else has trouble with that hub, though.)
If that fails, then I will try another cable. (But I have similar cables that are behaving fine.) If that fails, I'll call you, Andrew!

That is an ANCIENT Besson in the avatar. :-) I play either a Yamaha 321 for jazz/pop or a Willson 2905 in brass choir. You can hear me by going to http://www.esnips.com/web/Snorlaxsperformances . All are live & unedited. The Hidas concerto was played on a Besson with a Denis Wick 4. The brass quintet pieces have me playing the horn parts on a Yamaha 321 euphonium with a drilled-out Denis Wick 5 mouthpiece. Hanniford Band is Wonderful...Lucky you!! I had been after composer Scott Irvine for YEARS (I even offered to put it on Finale for him...but finally I gave up) to send me a solo he wrote for Hanniford's principal euph. His name is Schultz, if it's the same guy and if I recall correctly. Terrific piece for a superb player!! Now back to our regularly scheduled thread... Jim

The wife is playing a Besson 2-20 Baritone in the Concert and I will play either a Martin (Elkhart) with a recording bell (the swivel style) or a Lark.
Dr. Hank (Henry Meredith) has most of us playing some of his 4500 brass instruments, mostly to get them out of his house/garage/barn, and as we do the English Brass Band thing we have everyone on cornet, Eb trumpet, Ebhorn, Baritone, Euphonium, Eb Tuba and BBflat Tuba, trombone, and bass trombone. It's his band, and we usually just do 2 concerts a year.
My wife went to the faculty of music at UWO where he and his wife teach, and we hang out, she's chorale prof. but just got promoted to Dean.
I keep threatening to learn the trombone, I'm more suited to the foolery in that section........
