Norton was great when Peter Norton actually ran the company. Peter Norton was an excellent programmer.

That may be true.
But what Peter Norton was famous for was “Norton Utilities” which included things like UnErase, DiskOp, Wipe Disk, Wipe File, a diagnostic utility, disk caching, etc. It did not include any anti virus software until after Symantec had already bought the company.

And, FWIW, I have used Symantec/Norton a/v products for over 15 years and have no complaints.

Don't mention Norton utilities. When I got my first computer in 2000 a bit of a late starter, I saw Norton utilities bundled with antivirus I think, in shop here for £60 quite a lot of money at the time, but went ahead and bought it.

I had a Lexmark printer at the time, wasn't able to get it to print properly, I ran Norton Utilities often and was in constant contact with Lexmark support about the printer.

Finally figured it out myself when I ran Norton Utilities it was changing something that was affecting the spooling or something on my printer.

Didn't run Norton Utilites any more and the printer worked perfectly.

A similar story with Go back software (software that takes a snapshot of your system constantly a bit like system restore only more thorough)

I bought it for £48 after seeing great reviews for it in a computer mag. Eventually because of a bug in it, I was totally locked out of my computer. Ok they did release a bug fix but too late to stop me having spent 30 or so hours reinstalling everything.

That is why I take with a pinch of salt any recommendations (especially for software) I see in a computer mag.
