Wow, that was a close one. I thought we were about to fall off the fiscal cliff or grab the third rail or the end of the times was upon us. But you guys showed great restraint and maturity. Good for you. hehe

Now has the who's DAW is bigger question been finally answered.

A tool is just a tool and if it works for you...fine! I have no interest in convincing you or anyone else to use, or not to use RealBand. I tried it. I didn't like it very much. As I said before I believe there are much better DAWs out there and Reaper is currently my DAW of choice. And because I have BIAB I don't need a DAW that works with RealTracks.

I am actually in somewhat of that school. When you consider the global effects on a corporate network, is there really a reason to change to a new version of anything just because it's a new version? A new version because that evil, soulless corporation that is Micro$oft puts out new versions just to make more money from companies who will not see a benefit?

My company, in June, upgraded to Micro$oft Exchange Server 10. Since then, connections drop and immediately reconnect, the Admins who need to book conference rooms call us non stop because suddenly the rooms are showing up as restricted or not showing up at all, and shared mailboxes vanish or become corrupt. Help desk calls for Exchange issues have increased by about 30%. I have yet to get an answer why they upgraded other than "We want the latest version".

But I digress.

Though, not really. There is a parallel but it still comes down to preference. Stuff like green screen monitors, though I know you were making a point, were safety related, as those CRT screens caused eye problems, emitted cathode rays, and burned out to a point where it was cheaper to replace.

Nobody is saying to stay in the stone age (I never recorded at Bedrock Studios). When the DAW thing started, my question is why you use RB at all if you are going to play your parts in anyway. I don't even know what you guys mean by "tempo matching", though I know what each of those words means. I don't know how it applies. I thought you were supposed to play in tempo and that's how you "matched". Having never used the feature, please do teach me about what that is. My mind is thinking "you pull in a drum loop or a clip of some kind and hit a button and it adjusts it automatically to the tempo of the song", which is available with a right click in RB but called (I think - I am not at that computer) tempo stretching. I use it a lot to line up BGV tracks.

But this cabbage has been chewed enough and it's time to bow out of this one. My life doesn't change with regard to who uses what software, so whatever.

In my reply I used the term Tempo Matching" to mean the ability to Match the Delay / Tremolo / Chorus timing to the BPM of the track I want to apply the effect to, that's all I meant...

Hi All,
first my applogies up front.... I dont think in my entire life have I ever been more angry and frustrated. I am so tired of pissing away good money after bad.... I am an old shcool musician,, a simple Sax Player... I play pro, etc... tour,,,, bla bla bla.... Im not up to speed on any of these supposed music apps, arranging etc... out there.... I have BITB, and all of PG software apps, updates, etc.... and none of it I can get to work or deal with.... Its easier for me to sit at a piano, draw and create my own music paper from scratch,,, and I mean draw the five staff lines,,,, by hand,,, and plink out the arrangments using a broken pencil, with no lead inside, snowing, with sunami's coming inland, when the moon and venus line up with sagitarius..... get what I mean?...

I am in the process of re-gearing my pro audio setup,,, I have 4 PA Cabs, 4 Sub Cabs, amps for them, 12 mics, in ear monitors, for playing live sound and gigs,,,

All I want to do is to create my arrnagments, with the proper sampled instrument sounds that I arrange to, with my playing sax,,, to my audience,,, and this seems impossible... no one can tell me the follsoing and why.

1. sound card for laptop
2. why do I need a workstation for intruments when I have already purchased them from PG music?
3. Why cant I play and do all this throgh my laptop?
4. why do I need to buy a seperate eq to mix and playback?
5. why do I need a workstation to play thourhg?,,
6. why do I need, to buy cakewalk now? arent these a competitor of PG music? why dont they fix thier sh*t?
7. Why do I need to piece together all this damn software, purhase more hardware for sampled intruments that I have already purchased from PG music?
8. why is this so hard? do any of these people think? or is music arranged and playbacked differently from overseas offshoring support and develoipment?

I hate PG Music,, they have been no help to me at all in answering any of these simple questions.... I can arrange and record faster with an old Peavey 8 channel mixer than I can dealing with PG music constant BS and lack of quality.... f*in losers....

So,,, to the Forum... I beg your forgivness and ask for your understanding....and Ideas... but I want a solution that is through my laptop for everything,,, I dont want to keep having to purchase more hardware, for the same stuff I have in software... does this make sense... another issue is i dont what to have a physical mixing board, to play back live sound... hell, isnt this why we have PC's? we shouuld be mixing and playing everything back throgh a PC... why am I the only one who thinks this way?,,, I am a one man show...I dont need some engineer in the back mixing for me... why cant I do all this throgh my laptop? why doesnt PG music have any setup examples anywhere on thier site for live sound performances. WHY? if they did this one thing it would solve and help so many idiots like me.

The only thing I can think of is two reasons,,,, Thier legends in thier own minds? Cant get thier heads out? Fail to Plan, Plan to fail?, Building airplanes in the air?, or its all offshore support issues? and music is considered mystical and taboo overseas?

again,,, I appologize for my rant... but I cant be the only person who is beyond frustrated with people who are telling us to purchase thier competitors applications.... WTF?

Some people just like a certain brand and use them. There are people who use only PG products and still sound as good as those who use other brands.)

(PG programs are very easy compared to many others, it still takes time to learn. I think many people just entering recording with software are as frustrated as you. Ask a question in the forum of the product you are using and you will get answers.)

your rant against PGMusic is bad form. Of all software companies, they have some of the best support.

I see this is your first post... that may be part of the problem. The forum is a great way to get answers... but you need to ask specific questions. Nobody can offer solutions to a general rant.

Start by telling us about your computer, version of BIAB, and your current setup. How are you trying to connect to biab at this moment?

and, where do you live? maybe one of the forum members is nearby and could help in person.

Eddie, you have been beating this dead horse for a long time now!

Go back to some of your previous threads and you will see why others and I use other DAWs.

Also using the same DAW for years is a good answer IMO. I have limited time to make music. I prefer to use a DAW that I am familiar with to get that music in a presentable form than to spend that precious time learning another DAW. Plus any DAW along with BiaB will do the same thing as RB.

Dare I try to say this one more time?

For the majority of us, our DAW is used for RECORDING. Eddie, has stated he does not do RECORDING. What he does (in my words) is composing and arranging. And for this RB, with its Real Tracks meets his every need.

What is appently not clear here is that if you do RECORDING you have more needs . ..and of course that leaning curve stuff is a big part of the equation.

Boy, with all this holiday time, I have way to much time to stir the pot here.

You got it, Dan. I record just far enough into the recording realm to get a workable copy of a song to send it to people to critique the writing. I want to write, not become Bob Clearmountain. There has never been a live drummer up here where I have to worry about mic placement, no guitar player demanding that he have a mic exactly 11.5 inches from his speaker.... I care enough about it to want a dead room for vocals because the rest is direct anyway. Nobody is going to come to my 2nd floor home studio to cut their CD.

But this has been a great thread to hear opinions and I have read it all through several times.

I own, and have used Reaper, Sonar X1, Multitrack Studio, Acid Pro. All solid well rounded programs. I use BiaB and RB because i can do 99% of everything those can do, and i do not have to change platforms and upgrade multiple programs.

Two things i wish RB would address:

1. Please add a better automation system I.E. A node based feature much like sonar and all the others have. Heck even the entry level cakewalk has it.

2. Please fix the VSC timing issue so we can use those pesky plugs that need it.

Having said that I can always bounce a track from one of those other programs on the rare occasion i need to.

I actually did a test about a year ago where i started with a basic midi file and i processed it through VSC synths, added a couple live recorded tracks and mixed it down. I did the same project in Reaper, Sonar X1, and RB. The end result was amazing! They all sounded the same. But the really amazing part was that i actually found the RB mix to be a little easier to do and finish. Lastly i was able to add a couple RTs to it and polish that #&$% even further.

So like was said i choose to upgrade BiaB now and RB comes along for the ride, and does everything i need. I see where Reaper and Sonar have a deeper feature set, but i don't use everything RB has yet. And they are there to catch me if i fall.

It is work flow, what works best for you. I spent so much money chasing the perfect DAW, and guess what it is not there. Sonar, and Repear, and any other DAW has a few bugs, and issues, just as biab and RB do. Learn one and get good at it, if you get so good you reach the limit of a program, add one that fills that need. Until then you can waste time and money chasing something that does not exist.

Make music, have fun, and enjoy the process.

One little add on is that i have recorded original songs on Sonar, Multitrackstudio, and RB from that experience i can say RB does a fine job. Just as good as the others. I do like the automation in the other two it makes bringing instruments in and out a bit easier that using RBs volume record feature. But i can work with that as well.

That's exactly it, Rob. I keep coming back there too. If just one time you decide to add even a partial Real Track like an 8 bar rhythm guitar part or something, then you're going back to RB to generate those 8 bars, saving it, importing it back to whatever DAW you were working with and what's the point then? Just stay in RB in the first place because with the whole project evolving right there you can experiment with lots of RT/RD's and many times discover some very cool things. Even though I will ***** and moan with the rest of us about the VST timing problem with Jamstix, all the different Biab midi drum parts and Real Drums audio tracks pretty much covers everything I need anyway.

John, one thing you may be missing is you don't have to make RB generate a whole track. You can simply generate however many bars you need by highlighting those bars with your mouse first. Then the generation times are very fast and remember don't open a Biab song in RB, D&D the tracks.

Scott, thanks for your comment about RB's midi. I keep reading that too and if RB's midi editing is that good then why would I start using something else? Automation, yeah I can see it but still I'm not bad with what I've got. I can spend $99 right now and upgrade my old Sonar Home Studio to X2 but I still don't see any real compelling reason to do so considering I would be a month at least just getting familiar with it.

Something that looks interesting is Abelton Live. Sure, all you can find concerning Live is all about hip hop DJ's, beatz construction and euro dance stuff but I've been on their forum and it turns out there's lots of traditional players like us using it too. I'm fascinated with it's ability to completely rearrange a song on the fly, you can mix and match song elements to the nth degree sort of like our Conductor on steroids. I think I could take a bunch of Biab song tracks plus my own tracks, throw them into Live and have a great time. The only problem is it's not cheap.
